Safe Third Country Agreement struck down

| December 11, 2007

Show Notes:

The Safe Third Country Agreement between the United States and Canada came into effect 3 years ago.

Under the agreement, refugees arriving at the Canada-US land border were not allowed to enter Canada to make a refugee claim.

In the first 15 months of the agreement, government statistics showed a 40% drop in the number of claims made at the land border offices.

The Safe Third Country agreement was challenged in Federal Court by the Canadian Council for Refugees and other groups.
