Vancouver City Council is opposed to the Gateway Project that will see the widening of Highway 1 and the twinning of the Port Mann bridge.

Yet the city's engineering department came forward recently with a plan to add HOV lanes to a highway within city limits that will take traffic from the Trans Canada - a proposal that opponents call Gateway through the back door.

In an important victory for this fight, Council voted down the plan and sent the engineers back to the drawing board.
