Subsection 15 of the Canadian Charter or Rights and Freedoms came into effect in April 1985.

Many women have been disappointed by court decisions that failed to recognize and address the disadvantages women experience—and therefore failed to deliver on the equality promised by section 15.

In a move to challenge this failure—a group of lawyers and activists have taken the bold course of re-writing several of the judgements handed down by the Supreme Court.

They call their project The Women’s Court of Canada and this month they are celebrating the publication of its judgments in the current issue of the Canadian Journal of Women and the Law.
