Yes there should be labels informing people of what they are paying good money to ingest. Capitalism is about fooling people into thinking they need to buy the crap and plastic widgets when they really don't. Kapitalism is all about making as many bad choices available to working class slobs as possible and then blaming people for being so gullible. As far as capotalists are concerned, each of us is only really capable of characteristics ranging from self-interest all the way to appalling greed, and that's all. We are all individual "agents" acting out our pre-packaged economic roles within their set of economic rules and driven by the seven deadly sins, or some such. Actually I think it's the way the superrich capotalists view themselves and therefore lumping everyone else in with their own diseased states of mind.

There's a distinction to be made between cigarettes and nicotine.  Nicotine has its uses.

I think payday lenders and other usurous parasites should be outlawed. Easy credit loan sharking is a massive transfer of wealth from poor to filthy rich. Cement wall at dawn without blindfolds or cigarettes would be too good an end for them.

And many people do need to use them. They are the bank of last resort for too many working poor and those just poor.

I agree. But, currently, they are legal and usury doesn't kick in until 60%.

Nonsense.  Poor people use them and that's all we know for sure.

I'm poor and I don't use them.  That's all we know.  That and that Coast Capital Savings Credit Union is the "bank of last resort" and they're a respectable outfit.

I think what some politicians tend to forget is that the new economic liberalization agenda of the 1980's and 90's was supposed to make Canada a more prosperous country overall. Some of them believed Canada would become a fabulously wealthy 51st US state of sorts. And part of the deal was that our governments would handover certain powers of money creation and credit to chartered banks and a financial industry who then accepted this gift as a green light to create money and credit as debt, and charging the public higher rates of interest owed on debt. These democratically controlled powers handed off to the profit-driven banks and finance industry that ran into trouble losing money on stock markets, gambing on oil and gas, and bad real estate speculation banking and finance was ncreasingly deregulated in the 1980's. And all the while Canadians were waiting for the neoliberal ideology to start producing "jobs, jobs, jobs" as Mulroney promised, a top-down ideology was being implemented by Ottawa on the provinces with all kinds of "race to the bottom" anti-labour legislations, neoliberal trade deals and economic policies. Canadian workers have not enjoyed a real increase in wages since about the start of neoliberal agenda in Canada. And these payday loan sharks and easy credit industry has been treated like any other upstanding industry and allowed to proliferate as if they are as important to the economy as manufacturing or foreign-based oil and gas execs looking to corner large share interest in Canada's bustling fossil fuel export industry.
