Gaiaisi is a Toronto-born singer and rapper, prioritizing the fight against climate change: reversing mass extinction, ending factory farming, ending deforestation and habitat destruction, and reawakening humanity to find fulfillment in life from something other than material consumption.
Growing up in Winnipeg, Young Jibwe now resides in Toronto and is a hip-hop artist, music producer, graphic designer, promoter, photographer and native rights activist. Young Jibwe also owns Animikii Music Group, a non-corporate business, 100% native owned.
Delta Will is an homage to the blues and a space exploration mission, delivered by one spaceman and his trusty rig of guitars and wacky percussion.
Sarah Burton’s steady and soulful voice tells the tales of life with beauty, strength and weariness, and an ever-present sense of excitement. Classically trained on the piano, she turned to rock when she was introduced to the sounds of Tori Amos by a piano teacher, and discovered her father’s old Spanish guitar.
Illogik is an established Toronto-based revolutionary artist. With a decade of production under his belt, as well as eight years of rapping, Illogik has long been using the musical medium to spread revolution and liberation. His music has been an outlet to express his political stance, honing words and beats into original radical content that gets the people moving.
Rejected from both heaven and hell, the Indigo Cabaret roam the earth for eternity seeking to keep the flame of humanity’s creativity alive through inspiring performance pieces that lean to the magical and ridiculous.
Loopsy Dazy’s music can be described as live acoustic electronic music. Their live shows consist of dynamic arrangements of guitar, violin, keyboards, drums and various live looping techniques and effects without the use of pre-made audio or midi loops or bedtracks. In two short years since the project’s launch, Loopsy Dazy has played shows throughout the eastern seaboard. Their music has been used in two films, “When The Iron Bird Flies” and “Born In Tibet”.
As part of the innovative musical network in Toronto that is Architextures, Lumberjockey is focused on spreading awareness of music with intent. The Knotibel artist does so by harbouring emerging, emotionally engaged sounds of the future and promoting love and light through dynamic function.
The funds:
This is a FUNdraiser, so we are asking for donations of $10-20. If you can not afford $10, then there will of course be a sliding scale option. Advance tickets will be available at the Fairies Pyjamas (Kensington Market) as of December 26th. They will be $10, and with an advance ticket you will get a free raffle ticket at the door, which could win you one of our lovely donated raffle prizes!
Following are descriptions of Rising Tide Toronto and ASAP, the fund recipients.
Rising Tide Toronto is a grassroots collective that challenges environmental injustice and the root causes of climate change on Turtle Island (North America) through direct action, in solidarity with people’s struggles locally and globally.
Aamjiwnaang + Sarnia Against Pipelines (ASAP) is bringing awareness to the city of Sarnia and taking action to ensure the health and safety of their community.
The issue:
Line 9 is a controversial Enbridge pipeline that we are going to stop from becoming part of the tar sands pipe line network! Some “powerful” folks would like to use this pipeline to send tar sands oil to the east coast (NB or Maine) and beyond. But not if we have something to say (or sing) about it.
Over 9 million people live within 50km of this nearly 40 year old Ontario pipeline. Our drinking water, atmosphere and ecosystems are in jeopardy, all in the name of short-sighted economic gains and further investment into an energy source that we already know is finite — fossil fuels.
As you are probably aware, there have been numerous pipeline oil spills over recent years. What you may not know is that tar sands are much harder to clean up than conventional crude, because it sinks instead of floats. Enbridge’s Line 6b ruptured into the wetlands of the Kalamazoo River in 2010 and the river is still far from clean.
Attorney Anthony Swift recently wrote ‘On the same day that Enbridge told its investors that its tar sands spill and cleanup had made the Kalamazoo River cleaner, The EPA ordered the Canadian tar sands pipeline company to resume its cleanup of the Kalamazoo River after finding that submerged oil exists throughout approximately 38 miles of the Kalamazoo.’ What’s more, chemicals specific to the transport of tar sands poisoned the air around the spill, causing immediate and long term health consequences for Kalamazoo’s residents.
