Solidarity with Six Nations: Living on the Grand River Territory

Melissa Elliott is co-founder of Young Onkwehonwe United (YOU), a rising youth group at Six Nations that has been campaigning for a Band Council funded youth centre and a stronger youth voice in their community. She has also sat as the youth delegate on the Six Nations land claims negotiations team.

Melissa Elliott has been at the front of the building resistance at Six Nations against the 2010 Olympics and at the centre of the ongoing controversy there about the Torch Relay--she was part of a group of activists that confronted former AFN Cheif Phil Fontaine at a corporate press conference for the relay, and she and other members of YOU recently intitated a series of community meetings in Ohsweken, where the Confederacy Council has considered protesting the torch relay.

Melissa Elliott is a strong advocate for Six Nations sovereignty and a nation-to-nation relationship between Six Nations and the Canadian State and its municipalities based on the Two Row Wampum Treaty.

WHAT: Speaker Event featuring Melissa Elliot, co founder of Young Onkwehonwe United (YOU), a rising Six Nations youth group, and Jim Windle, co founder of Two Row Understanding through Education (TRUE) and editor of Tekawennake News.

WHY: Because we live on the Haldimand Tract, which is Six Nations' Grand River Territory, and because relationships between settler communities and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy should be governed by the Two Row Wampum Treaty, made between the Confederacy and European settlers in 1644.
