In the mid 1990's poor people in East Downtown Toronto organized massive demonstrations against the Harris cuts to social services. Today, as the neighourhood continues to be gentrified and more services are removed from the area, community workers, anti-poverty activists, and poor people are coming together to discuss the ways they can defend their community.
Gaetan Heroux of the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty has worked in East Downtown Toronto for over 20 years. Heroux says the loss of the Special Diet Allowance, the closing of major shelters, drop-ins and cheap rooming houses is having a devastating impact on poor people who live in the Dundas and Sherbourne area.
