In 2002, Maher Arar was arrested while in transit at JFK airport in New York, sent to a Syrian jail with the complicity of Canadian officials and tortured. In 2006, Justice O'Connor ruled that Arar had not committed any offence and was not a danger to Canadian security. On February 12, Arar spoke to a fundraising gala for the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.
