The in-migration of large numbers of First Nations people to prairie cities like Winnipeg in the latter half of the 20th century resulted in a new and destructive form of poverty.
What is often hidden from view is the response from the aboriginal community. Aboriginal women, in particular took a leading role in combating the effects of poverty and racial prejudice.
