The Politics of Naming: Darfur and Iraq

In a recent article in the London Review of Books, Mahmood Mamdani argues that the reason Americans support intervention in Darfur so strongly stems from a lack of knowledge about the history and context of the struggle there. In this lengthy interview, he clearly articulates a need for a more complex view of the situation in the Sudan.

Mahmood Mamdani is Herbert Lehman Professor of Government and a professor of anthropology at Columbia University. His most recent book is "Good Muslim, Bad Muslim: America, the Cold War and the Roots of Terror".
