Join the Ben Navaee Gallery from June 9th to 18th as it celebrates its most recent art show, ‘Small is Beautiful’!
Reception: June 13th from 3:30 to 5:00pm
The theme of the show is influenced by E.F. Schumacher’s collection of essays entitled, ‘Small is Beautiful: Economics As If People Mattered’
First published in 1973, the essays were written in response to emerging globalization. Schumacher was Chief Economic Advisor to the National Coal Board in the United Kingdom for 20 years. He was one of the first economists to question the appropriateness of using GNP to measure human well being, emphasizing that “the aim ought to be to obtain the maximum amount of well being with the minimum amount of consumption.” Schumacher's work coincided with the growth of ecological concerns and with the birth of environmentalism, which is a movement centered around ecology, health, and human rights. It demands the sustainable management of resources and protection of the natural environment through changes in public and individual behavior.
The idea that ‘Small Is Beautiful’ will be expressed in a variety of mediums ranging in size from miniature to 288 sq-in.
Artists featured include: Janine Dupree, Jason Fonceca, Sandra Herman, Mariana Jerez, Quin McColgan, Jerilyn Nighttraveller, Michelle Ramos & Lindsay Veh
