U.S. gets tough with the credit card industry

Hidden penalties, sudden interest rate hikes, deceptive language — those are just some of the abusive practices of credit card companies that Congress is trying to stop.

Consumer advocates applauded last week’s committee votes on two historic bills to reign in the industry. But before a final bill reaches Obama’s desk, there could be months more haggling — one last chance for card company lobbyists to delay or kill the reforms.
