Not Rex: The Omar Khadr nightmare

| October 28, 2010

This week's Not Rex, Lalo Espejo, laments the reactionary misinformed gloating of people whose political leanings don't include reason about the travesty of justice surrounding Omar Khadr.

Why is Lalo so quick to admit the "sins" of Khadr's parents?

Is it now a crime to hate Americans?

Is it now a crime to fight back against imperialist invasion?

Is it now OK to take the word of the Pentagon at face value when they say Omar's father was a leader of al Qaeda - something he always denied - and therefore guilty by association of... of what, exactly?

And telling Omar's mother to "shut up already" when she has said nothing in public for years is incredibly gratuitous. Would Lalo want his own mother to shut up if he were being held incommunicado in a torture camp for eight years?

What's past is past.

Imagine a sailor caught in a storm out to sea:

A pessimist would complain about the weather.

An optimist would wait for the weather to change.

A pragmatist would adjust the sails.

After a year, Omar Khadr is going to apply for a transfer to Canada.

How can we best put pressure on the government and our representatives to ensure that Mr. Khadr's transfer application is accepted rather than rejected?
