Not Rex: Discovering Japan

| March 24, 2011

The earthquake and the tsunami were natural tragedies. But this week Humberto DaSilva argues the Japanese, and General Electric, that designed the Fukushima nuclear plant, should have known better than to locate it on the beach by an ocean fault. But the Fukushima nuclear plant is a memorandum on nuclear safety even for Ontario...

Ummm. All of Japan is in a fault zone, mmmmmkay? Nuclear power, as a whole, is much safer and cleaner than the other alternatives available to a resource-poor country like Japan. What is unfortunate is that Japan chose to use cheaper boiled water reactors (BWR's) instead of more expensive but infinitely safer models like Canada's homegrown CANDU reactors. This kind of disaster can NOT happen in a CANDU.

Bang on Rex. THe insanity of building new nukes in ON when there are plenty of cheaper and safer ways to meet all our electricity needs is beyond belief.
