Kim spent her first 16 years on a working family farm in Quebec. Her first memories of rabble rousing are of strike lines, promptly followed by Litton’s closure of the small town factory her father had worked at for 25 years, and of the sisters from Pensionnat des Ursulines de Stanstead, who brought her to her first anti-nuclear demonstration.
In university in Montreal, she joined the anti-apartheid movement, and lived for a short time in South Africa where she worked with a local, and newly legal, ANC committee to organize on behalf of returning exile, Chengiah Ragaven. Kim is a long-time member of Amnesty International and helped form their Co-Group for Cooperation with Indigenous Peoples along with Lynne Davis and Simon Bracoupe. She has been active in numerous other social justice, human rights, anti-poverty and anti-racism initiatives as an organizer and facilitator. She is also a founding member of CEPAL – the Canadian-Palestinian Educational Exchange, which next year marks its 10th anniversary of solidarity work in the Palestinian refugee camps of Lebanon.
Her interest in media began in CEGEP, where she received the journalism award at graduation for her work on the community newspaper. She was elected editor of the Campus at Bishop’s University, but went on to move to Montreal, and to move her media engagement to the side of activism and academia, doing media and communications work for the organizations she worked with, and studying, writing and lecturing on media in her academic career.
Kim came to rabble.ca in 2004 after conducting interviews with wonderful feminists from across the country for Ten Thousand Roses: the making of a feminist revolution. She has graduate degrees from Concordia University’s School of Business in non-profit administration, and from Carleton University in Comparative Literary Studies, where she was a member of CUPE 4600. She has worked for ten years as a consultant on federal employment equity legislation, and aspires to perhaps one day complete a doctorate started in Sociology... Kim can be sighted most frequently searching for a good cup of coffee in Ottawa, Toronto or Vancouver, and spends as much time as she can with her partner, Libby Davies. She has been rabble's part-time publisher since August 2006
