Council and allies challenge Nestle water takings in Ontario

The Council of Canadians and Wellington Water Watchers – with legal representation from Ecojustice – have won the right to challenge a proposed agreement, which would permit the draining a shared water source during low water conditions, despite objections from Nestle and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE).

By gaining Party status through the Environmental Review Tribunal (ERT), the groups will ensure the watershed is protected from harmful takings, especially during droughts. As noted on its website, “The ERT’s primary role is adjudicating applications and appeals under various environmental and planning statutes.”

KI Nation paddlers hunted by Wapusk, the polar bear

During August and September, a team of paddlers from KI Indigenous Nation paddled 350 km to raise awareness about their community's decision to protect their entire 13,025-square kilometre watershed under Indigenous Law.

Wild Life: Update from the KI Nation paddlers

The Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (KI) Indigenous Nation (KI) is determined to safeguard their water. Between August 24 and September 7 a team of paddlers from KI are travelling 300 km beyond the nearest road to paddle the ancient route from the KI village to Hudson's Bay. Fish Pole: Aug. 29 Update from the KI Nation Paddlers

For lunch today we stopped by a fast-flowing stream that enters the Fawn from the west amid a grove of large old white spruces that form a great camping spot. Terry said that this place is named "Fish Pole" in the language. We didn't have to ask why.  

Within 20 minutes Richard had caught half a dozen gorgeous 2 pound Brook Trout. They are fascinating fish whose colourful spots blend perfectly into the pattern of the pebbled river bottom. Brook Trout need very clean, cold water to thrive as they do in these waters. The rivers up here have some of the healthiest Brook Trout populations anywhere.

On the last stop of her eight city tour to protect the Great Lakes, The Council of Canadians' Maude Barlow is joined by Thom McClenaghan, President, Friends of the Coves Subwatershed and Patrick Donnelly, Urban Watershed Program Manager City of London. The event began with children's choir - El Sistema London.  The lecture begins at 52 minutes into the video.
