Message to Canada's ambassador to U.S.: Stop lobbying for Keystone XL pipeline

For Immediate Release

August 31, 2011 (Washington, D.C.) - The Council of Canadians, the Indigenous Environmental Network and Greenpeace Canada presented a letter addressed to Ambassador Gary Doer at the Canadian embassy in Washington, D.C. today demanding an end to lobbying in favour of the Keystone XL pipeline.

"Ambassador Doer has publicly recognized he is actively lobbying for Keystone XL," says Maude Barlow, National Chairperson of the Council of Canadians, who will be present to help deliver the letter. Election postpones Canada-EU trade offers; now is the time to debate the deal, says Council of Canadians

Ottawa -- The Council of Canadians is encouraged the federal and provincial governments have postponed an exchange of offers with the European Union before a seventh round of Canada-EU free trade negotiations next week. The organization is asking the provinces to make any offers public prior to bargaining away public policy with the EU, in light of upcoming provincial elections and new revelations the trade deal is worth half what the Harper government is promising.

New evidence that voter suppression changed outcome of 2011 federal election

Ottawa - The Council of Canadians has released a new research study that shows that tens of thousands of Canadians received fraudulent telephone calls during the May 2011 federal election, these calls were targeted at non-Conservative voters and they were effective in reducing voter turnout.

"With all the evidence we have now submitted, we believe we have a very strong court case to overturn the election result in the seven ridings where we are supporting legal actions," says Garry Neil, Executive Director of the Council of Canadians.
