R2P is in the air. When the United Nations approved a declaration in 2005 that the international community has a Responsibility to Protect the citizens of a nation when its government cannot, or its government is itself the oppressor, expectations were high. This was not a call simply for military intervention: It offered an entire continuum of tools, from the diplomatic to the economic. Nonetheless, loud silence followed. Now R2P has been invoked, at least implicitly, for Libya, where those expectations might finally be met. But its limitations are also palpable, as Afghanistan has dramatically demonstrated.

Letter to my Nimby

People unite! = not in anyone's backyard : coal, gas, nuclear.

 Current energy system comes at the expense of water. We absolutely cannot afford this. We absolutely need water. And we absolutely need energy.

 We all can absolutely have both - and more!

Our communities will not be pitted against each other. No matter how much one wants to be a NIMBY, and push their woes onto other communities or disregard the plight of other communities created through our lack of energy sufficiency, what looks like an isolated struggle is the struggle for the whole earth.

Conservative adscam, cost of action plan ads?

Hi I was just wondering if anybody knows any way to estimate the cost of the "action plan" TV ads that have been running in very heavy rotation lately?  How much taxpayer's money is the Conservative government using to promote itself with these pre-campaign ads?  I think that taxpayers would be PO'd if they knew what they are paying for the Harper government to bombard us with these commercials.

Washington Post: Many Afghans prefer the Taliban

For many people whom I speak to about the war in Afghanistan, the point which proves the criminality of our occupation of that country is that many Afghans prefer the harsh but predictable rule of the Taliban to the monsters and thugs we have put in power. We have seen in previous blog posts some of the extent of this reluctant support for the Taliban. Now the Washington Post offers us similar sentiments from Laghman province, next to Kabul (and the location of the recent airstrike which is said to have killed up to fifteen civilians).
