Ministers Hear Group of Six Billion

When a Cabinet minister tries to take credit for a meeting, you know that the meeting is a success. When the Group of Six Billion People’s Summit (G6B) put Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham and International Trade Minister Susan Whelan on the big stage at the University of Calgary last week, before an audience of about 1200 lively and vocal souls, Bill Graham twice tried to imply that the federal government was somehow responsible for the meeting.

Last week Ottawa commentator Pam Foster learned she had been approved to cover the G8 Summit. (Security forces at first denied her media accreditation.) Of course, by last week, the Summit had ended.

Edmonton editor Dan Rubenstein also fought accreditation denial and won. Elaine Briére, Vancouver photojournalist, has filed an Access to Information request demanding to know why she was denied.

Unimportant oversights not worth fighting? If only.

Responsible Citizen

Neuroscientist Dr. Arthur Clark agreed to an interview in his crowded office in Calgary’s premier medical facility, the Foothills Medical Complex. Clark is a co-founder and sustaining member of the Canadian Action Network to End Sanctions on Iraq (CANESI). He administers the Dr. Irma M. Parhad Fund, which has instigated and supported progressive elements in Calgary since 1995. Dr. Parhad, Dr. Clark’s Iraqi-born first wife, died of cancer in 1994 at the age of 46.
