Judge appears to blame victim in sexual-assault case: Globe and Mail

Quote:

In the 2006 incident, Mr. Rhodes and a friend met the 26-year-old victim and her friend outside of a bar and headed off into the woods outside of Thompson, a town of 13,000 about 760 kilometres north of Winnipeg, the paper said. He and the victim kissed; later, when they were alone, Mr. Rhodes had sexual intercourse with her without her consent at the side of the highway.

At trial, Mr. Rhodes maintained that he believed the woman had consented.

Finishing School for Prostitutes

People get all up in your face about rights for sex workers and I wholeheartedly agree there needs to be legislative help, such as raising the legal age of workers in all sex related industries, but working girls also need to start helping themselves. Sex workers need to meet the straight world halfway if they want the straight world to really listen.  Working girls also need to learn how to protect themselves by minimizing their own risks and get training from peole who've been in the biz and know all the risks as well as how to be a high-end companion or sugar baby to get more respectful clients.

Being Female

Quote:
When I think about being female I think about being loved. What I mean by that: I have a little exercise I do when I present my work or speak publicly or even write (like this). In order to build up my courage I try to imagine myself deeply loved. Because there are men whose lives I’ve avidly followed—out of admiration for their work or their “way.” Paolo Pasolini always comes to mind. I love his work, his films, his poetry, his writings on film and literature, his life, all of it, even his death. How did he do it—make such amazing work and stand up so boldly as a queer and a Marxist in a Catholic country in the face of so much (as his violent death proved) hate. I have one clear answer. He was loved.

woman fired for shaving her head in support of uncle with cancer--manitoba human rights commission says "too bad"

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story/2011/01/27/mb-shaved-head-firing...

http://www.cbc.ca/cp/national/EG623th.html

I can't think of a more obvious display of sexism than firing a woman for shaving hear head.

First, it's obviously totally acceptable for a man to do it.  No male would be told it's not professional for them to wear a shaved head at work or would be asked to wear a wig at work.

Second, it reinforces the absurd notion that women are to be "pretty" at work, according to the male traditional hetero definition of attractiveness, and that they are under added duress to conform to that image in the service industry and are often hired specifically for that purpose (think earl's, hooters, etc.)
