Welcome to Haida High

Quote:
It's a sunny June 1 morning in Yan, an ancient Haida village on the northeast coast of the island of Haida Gwaii, British Columbia. Once home to two different Haida clans, all that's left of the village is a re-created Haida building, a few decaying totem poles, and the skulls of the people that died there lying just beyond the tree line. Abandoned by the Haida in the late 19th century, today the seaside site is crawling with teenagers.

NY Times article: "Hispanics Identifying Themselves as Indians"

Came across this article, and found it interesting.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/04/nyregion/more-hispanics-in-us-calling-...

" “Hispanic is not a race, ” said Mr. Quiroz, whose ancestors were the Quechua people, of the Central Andes. “Hispanic is not a culture. Hispanic is an invention by some people who wanted to erase the identity of indigenous communities in America.”

“We don’t believe we have to accept this identity just because we speak Spanish,” Mr. Quiroz added."

Two Spirits

An interview with Two Spirits director, Lydia Nibley

Quote:
Fred’s mother asked, “Why are people killed for being who they are?” It just doesn’t make sense that when LGBT and two-spirit people express who they are, they face bullying in schools, rejection by their families, and the institutional discrimination that makes life incredibly difficult. I’ve come to understand that when people express themselves fully they have important contributions to make—and that a range of gender and sexuality is a gift to the culture.

Pipeline Oil Spill Affecting Little Buffalo

In Little Buffalo, people are complaining of a strong sour gas smell, nausea, etc that started after the huge oil spill.  No one even bothered to tell them about it!  And predictably, the company is denying that this has anything to do with the spill...

kind of reminds me how people are sick and dying in the gulf who worked on clean up crews and BP is denying that it has anything to do with them.  "it's coincidence!"
