Dr. Tarek Loubani and filmmaker John Greyson were arrested Friday, August 16, at approximately 10 pm Cairo time. They stopped in Egypt on their way to Gaza where they were working on a medical/academic exchange between the al-Shifa hospital in Gaza and London Ontario’s  University of Western Ontario. Nothing is known about the reasons for their arrest but the supposition is that Tarek Loubani, an experienced and skilled emergency physician may have offered his assistance to Egyptian medical personnel who were attempting to cope with the sheer scale of the violence and the many wounded after Friday’s Day of Rage massacres.

Both men were freed and safely returned to Tronto after successful organizing on social media by activists.
