#BlackOutSpeakOut Teach-In

Wednesday, May 30, 2012 - 23:00 to Thursday, May 31, 2012 - 01:00

On Wednesday, May 30th Sierra Club Canada will host a #BlackOutSpeakOut teach-in on the environmental implications of the federal budget bill. Beginning at 7:00 p.m. MPs Megan Leslie (NDP), Kirsty Duncan (Liberal) and Elizabeth May (Green), and environmental law expert Stephen Hazell, will field questions from a live audience at St. Paul University in Ottawa ( 223 Main Street ). Environment Minister Peter Kent has been invited and we hope he will attend (we will save a seat for him).

The #Black Out Speak Out campaign is all about informing the public about the devastating impacts to environmental law and regulation contained in the federal budget bill. The teach-in will give Canadians a chance to hear the whole story and ask questions," said John Bennett, Executive Director of Sierra Club Canada.

The "teach-in" was used on the first Earth Day in 1970 in hundreds of locations across the United States to inform the public about threats to the environment. The #Black Out Speak Out teach-in is part of the democratic traditions of the environmental movement.

"The budget is a huge threat to the environment and democracy. Silence is no longer an option. We must all speak out for nature and democracy," said Mr. Bennett.

The 2012 budget bill contains 150 pages of changes to environmental law and regulation, including the repeal and replacement of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and devastating alterations to the Fisheries Act and Charities Act .

"Our government is trying to silence public debate on Canada's future. We not only have right to speak out, we have a responsibility to speak out.

Thank you for reading this story...

More people are reading rabble.ca than ever and unlike many news organizations, we have never put up a paywall – at rabble we’ve always believed in making our reporting and analysis free to all. But media isn’t free to produce. rabble’s total budget is likely less than what big corporate media spend on photocopying (we kid you not!) and we do not have any major foundation, sponsor or angel investor. Our only supporters are people and organizations -- like you. This is why we need your help.

If everyone who visits rabble and likes it chipped in a couple of dollars per month, our future would be much more secure and we could do much more: like the things our readers tell us they want to see more of: more staff reporters and more work to complete the upgrade of our website.

We’re asking if you could make a donation, right now, to set rabble on solid footing in 2017.
