Feeling Canadian: Book Launch & Reading by Marusya Bociurkiw

"My name is Joe, and I AM Canadian!" How did a beer ad become a
national anthem? When did Olympic opening ceremonies become an
advertisement for national superiority? What do toques and canoes have
to do with nationalism? Canadian couch potatoes need wonder no longer.
This book by award-winning Toronto-based author, media theorist,
filmmaker and professor Marusya Bociurkiw examines how affect
(passionate sites of feeling) and consumerism work together to produce
shows like Canada A Peoples' History, North of 60, and television
coverage of the 2010 Olympics. As Canadian TV expert Michelle Byers
writes, "Providing anecdotes that most readers will be very familiar
with, Bociurkiw's analysis situates us firmly within the context of

Who doesn't love Montreal -- the city, the ideas? How does spending early years in Montreal affects a writer's work?

Join Rona Altrows, Susan Calder, Barbara Schleifer and Julie Sedivy, four Calgary writers, all Montreal transplants, who have never lost their passion for the old sod, with brief readings, open discussion, book sales and mingling.

Palestine and the Great Games: At the Periphery and in the Centre

In this wide ranging and far reaching examination of the role of Palestine in the Great Games, the metaphor for grand geopolitical strategy involving nations and peoples first introduced by Zbigniew Brzezinski, in his 1998 book, The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy and It's Geostrategic Imperatives, author and journalist Eric Walberg paints a broad canvas putting Palestine both at the centre and the periphery of 100 years of modern and postmodern colonialism. Drawn from extensive travels and research outlined in his most recent book, Postmodern Imperialism: Geopolitics and the Great Game, Walberg shows how Palestine, despite its helplessness, is in a sense the most powerful player in the Great Games and its fate holds the key to the endgame.

A great way to start writing, jump start your stalled writing, or push your writing to a new level ...

Join a new session of an ongoing creative writing workshop, which evolved out of a University of Toronto Creative Writing course.

Through a series of writing prompts, we'll explore various components of narrative prose - exposition, dialogue, point-of-view, style, etc. Each week participants write a short, assigned piece which we'll read and discuss in class. These exercises are designed to spark the imagination and hone the craft of writing, and are suitable to writers of fiction and memoir, beginning writers or those further along.
