The Philippines is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a trade unionist. Last November, Canadian trade unionists from the Public Service Alliance of Canada, the United Steelworkers, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers and others went on the Canadian Trade Union Mission to the Philippines (CTUMP) to see for themselves the level of labour repression and human rights violations in the Southern Tagalog region of the country. Come and hear about what is happening!

Three delegates from the Canadian Trade Union Mission to the Philippines will be speaking in the forum “Canadian Eye Witnesses to Trade Union Repression in the Philippines,” including: Peter Leibovitch of Uniter Steel Workers, Daniel Kinsella and Joselito Calugay of Public ServiceAlliance of Canada.

Come and discuss how we can help our sisters and brothers. More than 77 trade union members and leaders have been murdered by death squads linked to the Philippine government since the current President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo ascended to her office. The killing and disappearances continue. Mass arrest of union leaders have also become common to try to suppress the struggle of workers for better wages and working conditions.

This event is organized by The Canadian Trade Union Mission to the Philippines and Bayan - Canada.
