End the repression! Democracy now!

Saturday, March 19, 2011 - 05:00

Please join us for a city-wide rally to stand in solidarity with the people of Libya, Bahrain, and the wider Arab world as they fight for freedom and democracy.

In Libya, ordinary people have risen up against the 42-year dictatorship of Muammar Gaddafi, and continue to resist his brutal attacks. We oppose military intervention by foreign governments in Libya and support the Libyan people's struggle to free themselves and build their own democracy. We demand that the Canadian government cut all ties with Gaddafi's regime, and force Canadian companies doing business with Gaddafi to withdraw.

Similarly, ordinary people in Bahrain have been demonstrating in unprecedented numbers to fight for freedom and democracy in their country. In the last few days, the government of Bahrain has escalated its attacks on peaceful protesters, calling in over 1,000 Saudi troops who are now helping to crush Bahrain's democracy movement. We demand an end to all forms of repression in Bahrain, and the immediate withdrawal of all Saudi troops.

Please join us to support these and other struggles for freedom and democracy in the Arab world, and to hold the Canadian government to account for backing dictatorships in the region.

If you can volunteer at Saturday's rally - to help distribute placards and leaflets, lead chants, collect donations, provide security, etc. - please meet us at 12:00 p.m. at Yonge-Dundas Square (south side of square).

Thank you for reading this story…

More people are reading rabble.ca than ever and unlike many news organizations, we have never put up a paywall – at rabble we’ve always believed in making our reporting and analysis free to all, while striving to make it sustainable as well. Media isn’t free to produce. rabble’s total budget is likely less than what big corporate media spend on photocopying (we kid you not!) and we do not have any major foundation, sponsor or angel investor. Our main supporters are people and organizations -- like you. This is why we need your help. You are what keep us sustainable.

rabble.ca has staked its existence on you. We live or die on community support -- your support! We get hundreds of thousands of visitors and we believe in them. We believe in you. We believe people will put in what they can for the greater good. We call that sustainable.

So what is the easy answer for us? Depend on a community of visitors who care passionately about media that amplifies the voices of people struggling for change and justice. It really is that simple. When the people who visit rabble care enough to contribute a bit then it works for everyone.

And so we’re asking you if you could make a donation, right now, to help us carry forward on our mission. Make a donation today.
