The School of Communication at Simon Fraser University, OpenMedia.ca, and the Vancouver Public Library present Media Democracy Day Vancouver 2011.

This year's expanded program takes place from Friday November 11 to Sunday November 13, at multiple venues including the Pacific Cinematheque; Vancouver Public Library, Central Library; and SFU Woodwards Goldcorp Centre for the Arts.

Since 2001, Media Democracy Day has united and engaged Vancouver-based citizens, cultural producers, the media, academics, activists, students, and community leaders in a dynamic discussion of the state of our Canadian media system. MDD Vancouver 2011 will feature keynote speakers, interactive panels, and hands-on workshops focused on critical analysis of media policy, citizen and alternative media production, and the transformation of the media system to make it more diverse and representative of audiences and communities.

Full program details are coming soon.

:: Keynote Speaker ::

DR. SUT JHALLY

Founder of the Media Education Foundation, and world-leading media scholar, filmmaker and analyst, Dr. Jhally brings tremendous insight to the task of understanding the media's role in shaping our social identities through gender and race, commercialism, violence and politics. He is the producer and director of various films and in explaining the power of documentary media to help us understand and confront our fears he notes that: "In a state of fear, citizens are vulnerable to manipulation by opportunistic politicians and a sensationalist media." Speaking on Remembrance Day, as well as the tenth anniversary of the US Air Force bombing of the Kabul office of Al-Jazeera, Dr. Jhally is an ideal speaker to open Media Democracy Day and introduce the film War Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning us to Death on November 11th, 2011 at the Pacific Cinematheque.
