Produced by CJPME, the Montreal stop is the first in a series of cross-Canada shows giving perspective to the Assault on Gaza which began Dec. 27, 2008, and lasted 22 days.
The Exposition is scheduled to coincide with the one-year anniversary of Israel's War on Gaza, where over 1400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed. "At its core, Human Drama in Gaza is a story about human beings seeking to find dignity and hope as their world is destroyed around them," explained Thomas Woodley, President of CJPME. The Exposition intentionally excludes photos showing the machinery of war, and instead focuses on the tragic beauty of average individuals trying to live their lives in the midst of deepening hardship. Explained Woodley, "The photographers whose work is featured caught simple everyday events in Gaza. Yet given the extreme circumstances in Gaza, these otherwise normal scenes take on a shocking new poignancy."
As an extra attraction for those interested in the Exposition, Cinéma du Parc will also be projecting the film Rachel (opening Jan. 29th) for much of the duration of the Exposition. Rachel tells the story of American activist Rachel Corrie who was killed by an Israeli Army bulldozer in Gaza in 2003 while trying to block the demolition of a Palestinian home. The Exposition and the movie are both scheduled to tour to other Canadian cities throughout 2010.
