Location
'A space without coordinates' is the inaugural show of SUM°, a curatorial and production incubator, made up of members Alize Zorlutuna, Bojana Videkanic, Nahed Mansour and Reena Katz.
The installation at Toronto Free Gallery makes a series of objects out of lacunae; the Latin-derived word for empty spaces, missing parts; gaps. Using wood, wire, rope, snow, video and digital audio, the various works in the show traverse undefined space through architectural mishaps and incomprehensible voices. The artists' bodies as performers, and yours as audience highlight the unintentional slippages and fissures inherent in modes of connection such as speech, touch, and listening. The artists' collaborative production is an effort to reconfigure relationships to language, identity, and land as a means of building alternative forms of engagement on personal, institutional and national scales.
