Cantores Celestes Women's Choir Presents:

Untravelled Worlds

Cantores Celestes Women's Choir will be performing a concert to benefit Royal York Road United Church.

Cantores Celestes is a women's choir based in Toronto's West End. Director Kelly Galbraith started the choir in 1989, with 8 singers. The choir has swelled to 50 singers, and the average size of the audience has grown from 200 to over 700 people. With its roots based in classical repertoire, the choir performs a wide variety of music, including Celtic, Bluegrass and contemporary pieces, including several Canadian premieres. Cantores Celestes performs regularly in Toronto, and has toured Western Ontario and Atlantic Canada. The choristers sing for the sheer joy of the music.

Cantores Celestes has a long history of giving back to the community, donating over $25,000 over the years, at its Christmas and Spring concerts. The choir continues this tradition with this concert to benefit the Royal York Road United Church. This concert is part of the series called Sundays @ 2, created by Kelly Galbraith.

This performance will showcase Classical music, including selections of Henry Purcell's Come Ye Sons of Art and Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria. A spiritual tone will be invoked with Shen Khar Venakhi, a 12th Century Georgian hymn. However, the choir will also demonstrate that classical music is not always serious, as evidenced by a delightfully wicked rendition of Giuseppe Verdi's The Witches Chorus, from Macbeth.

This concert showcases serious Canadian talent, combined with a global influence. The title song is Untravelled Worlds, by Paul Halley, a prolific Canadian composer and 5-time Grammy winner, whose inspirational work is based on Alfred Tennyson's Ulysses. Also featured is Ower the Hills by another Canadian composer, Stephen Hatfield, which ends with a rendition of Amazing Grace, that has a clarinet take the tune while the choir sings counter melodies. Other Canadian compositions include Saskatchewan-born Connie Kaldor's Wood River and Ave Maria by British Columbia's David MacIntrye.
