Parkdale Project Read, a community literacy program, is hosting a symposium called "Moving beyond tokenism: Strengthening community on community Boards of Directors." This symposium invites members of community boards of directors to discuss barriers such as arcane procedures, formal language and an over-reliance on written documents to the full participation at community board meetings, particularly by board members who do not have experience working on boards of directors, who may have difficulty reading minutes and written background material. The symposium is the culmination of a one-year project supported by the Metcalf Foundation, during which Parkdale Project Read redesigned its board meetings to be more open, accommodating and interactive. Parkdale Project Read board members and staff will share what they learned in this project and invite board members, staff and participants in other organizations to discuss barriers to full participation on their boards of directors and brainstorm solutions.
