Every year, workers killed and injured on the job are remembered on the National Day of Mourning. "April 28th is a day when we come together across the world to remember and honour our brothers and sisters killed and injured at work, or who have died from industrial disease," said John Cartwright, President of the Toronto & York Region Labour Council. According to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), 386 people lost their lives at work in Ontario in 2010. The WSIB also handled over 240,000 claims for workplace injuries in the province last year.
"It is a shame that even a single workplace death is allowed to happen. These deaths and injuries are preventable and as part of our commemoration of this day we must also reaffirm our commitment to workers' health and safety."
