Mainstage tribute to Tagore
Produced in association with the TACCT, the programming will feature poetry, music and performances that highlight the amazing range of Tagore's talents, a man who counts the national anthems of two countries among his impressive list of accomplishments.
Bright Oriental Star -- Video installation by Rachel Kalpana James (Thorsell Spirit House)
James revisits Tagore's 1929 visit to Canada and his influence on Canadian art and thought that has since been erased from the nati personal narrative, through the use of press clippings, evocations of Group of Seven paintings and quotes from the poet himself. A special Artist talk is scheduled for 2 p.m..
The Poetics of Colour -- Canadian premiere (2:30 p.m. in Eaton Theatre)
Filmmaker and Gallerist Sundaram Tagore will be available for an engaging Q&A session following the special screening of his critically acclaimed documentary about the life of Natvar Bhavsar, the pioneering modern South Asian artist whose work paved the way for other Diaspora artists in the American art scene.
Unveiling & Tea with Artist (4:00 p.m. in RBC Foundation Glass Room)
Curator Deepali Dewan previews the latest additions to the ROM's permanent collection, unveiling two stunning canvases by the renowned modern artist whose paintings are a product of deep meditation and informed by the colours of India: luminous, dye-infused works.
