Dr Bonnie Henry: A Modern Truly Canadian Hero

"This is our time to be kind, be calm, and to  be safe."

Dr. Bonnie Henry has become B.C.’s Great Communicator

  • Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry’s reassuring manner soothes British Columbians feeling anxious, upset, and disconnected by the COVID-19 crisis.

In retrospect, the B.C. NDP government’s decision to appoint her as the provincial public health officer in 2018 appears to be saving lives.

My husband is an artist but is not on Facebook, drew this lovely image (digital) of Dr.Henry. Her kind and knowledgeable demeanour has kept our household feeling calm through these bizarre times! Image by Pat McCallum.

1 person, possible text that says 'BE KIND BE CALM BE SAFE'

Great article. She is leading a great team. Her previous role as Executive Director of the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control and then the Deputy in the job she holds now has made her the most effective Public Health officer in the country. Be kind to her team and acknowledge them as well.

Dr. Joseph Finkler, a St. Paul’s Hospital emergency-room physician who survived COVID-19, credits Henry for repeating sound medical advice in easy-to-understand language.

In a phone interview with the Straight, Finkler pointed out that B.C.’s success is also integrally linked to a bunch of experts—in fields ranging from epidemiology to mathematics—who have done impressive modelling work underscoring what Henry says.

“When Bonnie Henry speaks, her script is made by a whole bunch of background researchers,” Finkler said. “It’s like Hollywood. She’s not quite the actor, but a little bit…She’s done a great job.”

Skyrocketing support for the John Horgan-led BC NDP Government's approach to the easing of covid-19 restrictions.

On Wednesday Premier John Horgan unveiled a plan for a gradual re-opening of the Province, which has been met with an overwhelming endorsement of BC residents at least conceptually, according to a new Insights West poll conducted with 747 BC residents immediately after the press conference. However, many residents feel the re-opening is proceeding too quickly, and there is some resistance towards social gatherings of small groups, eating at restaurants, in-person schooling, and hair salons.

There is an extremely high level of support for John Horgan’s announced plan to gradually re-open the province as announced on Wednesday May 6, 2020. A total of 79% back the plan

--------------

“Rarely in polling do we find support above 70% for any public initiative that is announced by a standing Premier” says Steve Mossop, president of Insights West. “John Horgan can rest assured that the public is backing his plan—and if anything, he should continue to proceed ultra-cautiously, as BC residents are leaning towards a very conservative approach of ‘returning to normal’ in the Province of BC as this pandemic unfolds.”
