Here's a great video for one candidate in rural Ontario. I really like it.

Seems Iggy's trying out a new line - 'Rise up' plea no change in strategy: Ignatieff

Quote:
"What I was saying last night, I've been saying all along and I keep saying - there's no change of strategy - is that it all begins to accumulate, drip drip drip. Slowly you look at his pattern of abuse of power and you do want to say to Canadians to 'rise up'," Ignatieff said Saturday. During a rally in Sudbury, Ont. on Friday, Ignatieff complained that people just seem to shrug off actions by Harper that the Liberal leader labelled as anti-democratic. "I kept hearing that refrain from Bruce Springsteen, 'Rise up, rise up.' Rise up Canada. Rise up, rise up. Why do we have to put up with this?" he said Friday, referring to a line in the song My City of Ruins on the album The Rising.

Actually, this is what sprang to mind for me when I heard Iggy's line. I can see why the Grits might be nostalgic for the early 80s...

I just about puked watching this = channeling Bruce Springsteen - hmm what happen to Canadian Rock idols? That said, what is more BS is that you will note that this video was shot in Sudbury Ontario. That's right folks, Iggy is taking it to the Cons - NOT!

That is an NDP held seat by GlennThubeault

But sure he is not thinking about himself or the Liberal Party of Canada - what a joke!

So once the NDP takes a seat from the Liberals, they have a divine right to it?

In fact, if you want an inadvertently embarrassing display of Iggy-the-non-Canadian, this is it.  It's like being oblivious to Trooper or Tragically Hip...

Looks like even more of our money is going to end up in the pockets of Conservative operatives and Harper sure seems happy about it.

Harper defends pay bonuses for political staff - CTV News

Quote:

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is defending pay raises for political staffers at a time of budget belt-tightening.

The prime minister was asked Saturday about bonuses for ministerial staffers which, in one case, drove up an employee's annual salary by $35,000 -- to $190,000.

The Tories have also approved new rules that would allow pay raises for employees, in addition to 50 per cent more separation pay on top of severance packages.

...

A document obtained by The Canadian Press, however, explains that some of the savings being touted will actually be achieved through changes in accounting.

The cost of international travel is now being transferred from the budgets of ministerial offices to departments within the Government of Canada -- allowing ministerial offices to declare a smaller budget.

The Liberals want that one back more than most because it was one of the 40 ridings that stayed Liberal in the Mulroney sweep of 1984.

If the Liberals can't win back seats like Sudbury or Outremont, they're afraid that Canadian voters will look on the NDP as a viable alternative, and that Liberal fortunes will continue to decline.

The Liberals want to win Sudbury back more than most, because it was one of the 40 seats the Liberals managed to hang on to during the Mulroney sweep of 1984.

If they can't win back seats like Sudbury, or Outremont, then they'll be afraid that more and more Canadian voters will look at the NDP as a viable alternative.

ha ha ha Malcolm - good one! I couldn't believe that libs would actually post this and not think about the optics - so he says this is not about him or the Liberal Party of Canada but about democracy - ha ha ha - so he takes his big Con speech to an NDP held seat - what a dope. And he channels Bruce Springsteen, instead of an Canadian band. Your right should have been the parachut club! At least they were Canadian. But more so, it was so in the past - the old glory days!

NDP targets Tories over HST in B.C.

Quote:

The NDP is making political hay with voter anger over the HST debate in British Columbia and it's putting Conservative Leader Stephen Harper on the defensive.

At a campaign stop in Vancouver on Saturday, Harper did his best to distance himself from the debate over the harmonized sales tax.

...

There was also no word on whether he would let B.C. keep the $1.6 billion in federal money given to the province when HST was brought in.

If Harper doesn't get a majority we'll have the Liberals in power. The three opposition parties will refuse to give confidence to a Conservative government. The Liberals will no longer keep Harper in power as they did for two years, not being ready for an election. It won't be a coalition as in the UK. The ministers will be all Liberals but they won't be defeated by the NDP or the Bloc as they don't want another election. Like with Pearson.

Remember that Ignatieff, an expert in international affairs, supported the invasion of Iraq. So did Harper, no expert.

Bob Ray and Iggy pushed for the extensions in Afghanistan. Did you hear his reply to Jack Layton ? Bob Ray, on CBC recently with Scott Taylor, even supported the UN/US ten year sanctions on Iraq. "They prevented Saddam from killing his own people" UNICEF reported 10s of thousands of deaths from the sanctions. They're both strong on Libya (Ghadafi=Saddam=Stalin ?)

Ignatieff/Ray will be something like Madeleine Albright.

Looks like Layton had a great rally in Newfoundland and Labrador. I like the idea of handing out provincial flags instead of (or along with) partisan signs for the rest of the campaign.

NorthReport

So combining that list with the ridings already mentioned as possible targets, there are at least 21 Quebec seats where the NDP looks to have the potential to contend seriously at support levels which have already been identified in recent polls.

Ignatieff rise up plea was so pathetic he is having to back off it today, claiming he was swept up by the energy in the room! Ha! I think if the Liberal campaign is going to have a theme song it should be, "Wish you were here," for all the times Ignatieff missed votes.

At this rate, Liberal party morale is going to bottom out one week before the vote.

Layton: NDP wouldn't interfere with shipbuilding deadline
Leader returns to N.S. for another round of campaigning

He also attacked the Conservatives for working toward a trade agreement with shipbuilding nation Norway, which makes Canadian shipbuilders nervous, and said the NDP wants more work for Canadian yards.

"Our preference is to have a national shipbuilding strategy that would ensure that there's enough ships being built here in Canada that all of the various yards have business," he said.

Layton was scheduled to travel to Bridgewater to campaign with South Shore-St. Margarets candidate Gordon Earle. Earle is trying to unseat Conservative Gerald Keddy in the riding,

I couldn't agree more. It is amazing how easily people fall for that Lib line. I am in a debate on the Free Press Blog with a couple of Libs who insist I have to vote Lib to stop Harper, and that the Libs are a better alternative. It is just mind numbing to imagine that there are actually large numbers of people who acutally believe that stuff.

Something deserve to be posted twice hehe. Seriously though I could not agree more. That is not mentioning the failures on Kytoto, HST, allowing tuition costs to skyrocket, the War in Serbia, offering massive tax cuts to the rich, abusing EI, lying about the NDP for years, and so on. I remember the Liberal government years and how untill the minority parliment they were so bad. Many of the things that the Liberals actually did are the things that stephen could only dream of. Their cuts reinfororced and empowered men like Mike Harris and set the country's progress back by a generation or more. They got away with lies for so long that Stevie would be green with envy. People complain about how nothing sticks to Steven I guess those who are surprised by that don't remember who the original teflon man was. So I don't see the Liberals as alteruntive

This plays into the NDPs wheel house. If this becomes the major national issue polls show that the NDP beats all the other party's on this issue by a large margin. That will only increase with the cons and libs at each other's throats.

Never underestimate the Liberal's ability to steal the NDP platform during the election campaign.

Exactly. Yes, Mike Harris, Ralph Klein, Gordon Campbell, and Jean Charest were wrong to privatize health services in their provinces, and are ultimately accountable to their electorates. They were enabled because the Liberal government would not properly enforce the Canada Health Act. They also hypocritically wagged their fingers at Alberta while Quebec was getting away with the same thing.

I hope Layton will head back to Southern Ontario at some point to tour those Conservative held ridings and support some of the NDP's great candidates like Grant Robertson in Huron-Bruce, Taras Natyshak in Essex, and Marc Laferriere in Brant.

Also, given the way the media has been on Layton's case about how will he win the seats he needs to be in government, leap-frog the Liberals yada, yada, ya...I think it is time he start calling out names in every region he visits. For example, in NS this weekend he could have said "South Shore St. Margaret's, Darthmouth Cole Harbour, Central Nova certainly, and of course the NDP has a history in Cape Breton and recently in Kings-Hants"

In New Brunswick he will have Saint John, Fundy Royal, and Madawaska-Restigouche. Quite frankly the NDP is competitive everywhere in New Brunswick, if it because a three-way race, and NBers remember how the NDP broke through in that province in 1997 and elected MPs in Acadie-Bathurst and Beauséjour, etc etc

I was just to the rally at Gordon Earle's campaign headquarters in Bridgewater, and the place was packed!

A good mix of youth, first-time voters, long-time volunteers, and seniors (including a couple who said they first voted C.C.F.!).

Jack looked as well as could be expected, and gave his ususal fiery speech.

He then sat down at the phone bank and called a few people on the list for the phone canvasser to call.

The ones he spoke to were very suprised with whom who was calling.

Watch out on election night!

Another day, another Tory candidate dodges a debate. At least she's consistent, if not necessarily wise. The CTV piece I saw (not on thar interwebs, darn it) has Block saying she'll be busy attending a 'volunteer appreciation event'. Seemingly Block doesn't have time for voter appreciation events, namely debates.
