A journalist to cut through the crisis in media democracy
In just a few days it will be over: we will have voted, and Canada's 43rd federal election will be behind us.
To help make sense of the results and what comes next, rabble.ca has prepared a special live "The Morning After" event for monthly subscribers/donors on Friday, October 25 at 3 p.m. EST with rabble.ca's award-winning parliamentary reporter, Karl Nerenberg, and special guest, former NDP House leader and deputy leader, and author of Outside In, Libby Davies.
You are invited to become a monthly patreon subscriber and join this discussion (for as little as $1/month right now!) and support independent reporting from Parliament Hill. Join here today!
This election campaign has been one of the nastiest on record, but has also contained surprises and moments of hope.
rabble.ca has reported on the surge in support for Jagmeet Singh over the past weeks, as Singh struck a chord with voters in the debates and through his response to the blackface scandal, with his decision to bypass the usual cheap shots and instead connect with young racialized people across Canada.
Amidst hateful rhetoric spewed by the right during this election, we are inspired by the young, diverse candidates running across the country.
We are also inspired to see the youth-led movement for a Green New Deal for Canada gain momentum and expand our political discourse.
But let's face it: right-wing trolls and fake news websites are having a detrimental effect on democracy. Whatever comes Monday, the right has been consolidating power across Canada -- in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, P.E.I., and Quebec. Rebel, True North, and The Buffalo are expanding their echo chamber as conservative political parties mainstream their views. We need media and journalists who reject the creep of right-wing framing, who reject the neoliberal views and policies espoused by the corporate media, and who reject hate however it is dressed up. We need more of rabble.ca, and Karl Nerenberg.
The disinformation wars are just beginning. Canadians need news sources and analysis that they can trust: non-profit media free of corporate and government bias; media with a strong history and track record of fact-based reporting. This is rabble.ca.
Luckily, we have Karl Nerenberg -- our award-winning journalist covering the federal politics beat. Karl tells the under-reported stories about national politics. "News for the rest of us," if you will. Week in and week out, Karl delivers exclusive reporting from the Hill, and it's readers, just like you, who keep him there.
Parliamentary political reporting needs to go beyond the speculation of who is up in the polls and who is down. We want to provide analysis beyond the headlines. Good parliamentary reporting requires a strong knowledge of the history and context of Canadian politics with a keen eye to what is behind the rhetoric.
We aim to crowdsource $2,500/month to keep Karl on Parl, and to expand our federal political coverage.
We can make this happen with your help.
