It appears that Parliament is at it again - another Moral Panic attack.
Given the plethora of lawyers in Parliament, I am appalled that no-one is questioning this. With particular reference to the banner under which this is being done, "crimes against children", evidence of a single over-zealous application of Section 159 of the Criminal Code, or one overly-technical interpretation of the "close in age" exemption should be enought to demonstrate the foolishness of a complete restriction or ban on the pardons process.
By all means, strengthen the pardon process itself - raise the standards, create new guidelines to govern applications - but an outright ban seems, to me, to do little than bring the administration of justice itself into contempt. It is playing for the gallery and should not be taking place.
