Top spokesman quits Prime Minister’s Office

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has lost another director of communications as his lead spokesman Andrew MacDougall is leaving for a public-relations firm in England.

Mr. MacDougall will stay in his job in Ottawa until early September, at which point he will join MSLGROUP, which describes itself as Publicis Groupe’s strategic communications and engagement network.

He stepped into the position in 2012 after his predecessor, Angelo Persichilli, said that he couldn’t handle the stress related to the job. Mr. MacDougall is the seventh director of communications to work with Mr. Harper since the Conservative Party took power in 2006. The Prime Minister has not yet announced a replacement.

In a goodbye note to his colleagues, Mr. MacDougall said that his desire to move to London is “long-standing and deep-seated.” He thanked his former bosses and colleagues, including Mr. Harper.
