Keith Harmon Snow on UN 'Leaked' Report on Atrocities in the Congo 1993-2004 (audio)

"The United Nations has accused Rwanda of wholesale war crimes, including possibly genocide, during years of conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. An unprecedented 600 page Report based on investigations by the UN High Commission for Human Rights catalogued years of murder, rape and looting in a conflict in which hundreds of thousands were slaughtered...

The Report accuses the Tutsi dominated Rwandan army of killing tens of thousands of ethnic HUTUS - including women, childen and the elderly over a period of seven years and two invasions - acts, it says, may amount to genocide..

Among the accusations, is that Rwandan forces and local allies rounded up hundreds of mean, women and children at a time and butchered them with hoes and axes. On other occasions Hutu refugees were bayoneted, buried alive or killed with hammer blows in large numbers. While the story of the HUTU Genocide has been around for a few years, it is the first time the UN has published such forthright allegations against Rwanda, a close ally of Britain and the US [*AND CANADA* who helped install Kagame in power as part of the US regime change 'Romeo Romeo wherefore art thou..?]

Rwanda's TUTSI leaders will be particularly discomfited by the accusations of genocide when they lay claim to the moral highground for bringing to an end the 1994 genocide in their own country.."

This is a must-hear interview!! There should be serious questions asked in the evil talkshop in Ottawa over Canada's role in this part of Africa and the actions of resource interests based here.

UN Admits Failing DR Congo Victims

"A senior United Nations official has admitted that UN troops failed to protect women and children in the Democratic Republic of Congo. More than 500 rapes have now been reported there in the past month alone, including 242 women and children who were raped over several days just 30 km away from a base used by UN peacekeepers.."

The Rwanda Patriotic Front's Bloody Record and the History of UN Coverups - by Christopher Black

"The invasion from Uganda had only one purpose: to clear the path through Rwanda to Zaire (DRC)..It means that the Americans, British particularly with Kagame and Museveni, planned the invasion of Zaire in 1994, probably before that...Mr. Jallow and Louise Arbour and everyone else have been protecting the RPF [President Kagame's Rwandan Patriotic Front] which hs now resulted in millions of deaths in the Congo and continues up till today.."

Keith Harmon Snow on 'Leaked' UN Report on Atrocities in Congo 1993-2003

"This UN report is another form of whitewash, and it's very interesting to see how the media and the intelligence flaks used as mouthpieces on the media, spin and twist it. Of course the report has major problems, but that's the nature of our racist war against people of colour everywhere...." [ a better version of a posting upstream with additional bg]

The Politics of Denial: The Strange Case of Rwanda - by Gerald Caplan

"...why they want to create such gratuitous hurt for the survivors of the genocide in Rwanda is 'impossible to fathom' says Caplan, but their 'egregious views' relegate this squarely to the lunatic fringe.."

No International Justice for Congo: UN Coverup of War Crimes

"Human Rights activists around the world have called for international justice and an end to impunity in the wake of the UN Mapping Report on Human Rights Abuse in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The report, which covers the period from 1993 to 2003 was released on October 1st, by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay says that, though it covers a period ending in 2003, these crimes continue because the perpetrators have never been prosecuted.

Defense lawyers for the International Criminal Tribunal in Rwanda (ICTR) say, however, that there is no reason to expect justice from an international criminal tribunal. ICTR defense lawyer Christopher Black, who recently published The Rwanda Patriotic Front's Bloody Record and the History of UN Coverups, in Monthly Review Zine, says that the ICTR will never charge officers of Kagame's army because if charged they will implicate their US and European allies:

''They're never going to charge the RPF, because it would be too dangerous. If you start charging the RPF, RPF officers, to save their necks, are going to start talking about others. And then you're going to get up to the Americans and the British and the Canadians and the Belgians. The whole thing would fall apart. They don't dare do that.."

Uganda, America's Pit-Bull, Wants to Lead a Larger War in Somalia

"America's top hit-man in Africa, Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni, is calling for much larger air, sea adn land war in Somalia - with Museveni's forces on point. France and the Ivory Coast: The Empire Strikes Back  - by Gary K Busch

"Currently there is an impasse in the runoff of the Presidential elections in the Ivory Coast. The French-linked and funded electoral commission declared that Allasane Outtora won the election while the Constitutional Court declared incumbent President Gbagbo as the victor.

Israelis Can Tell the Whole Story of Sudan's Division - They Wrote the Script and Trained the Actors

Ivory Coast: Testing Ground for US Backed African Standby Force  -  by Rick Rozoff

"Both Gbagbo and Ouattara were sworn in as President and in the interim the drumbeats of military intervention to depose Gbagbo have steadily risen in intensity. Whatever the respective merits of the two candidates' contentions, that the US has entered the fray on behalf of the one declared the loser by the nation's top court, exactly a decade after the  2000 US presidential election was decided by the Supreme Court would prove embarassing to any country other than the world's sole military superpower.

ECOWAS has suspended Ivory Coast's membership in the fifteen-nation group (Niger was suspended in 2009) and pressure is being put on ECOWAS to activate the West African Standby Force brigade under its control for an invasion of Ivory Coast. The African Standby Force, under the nominal direction of the African Union but trained by the US Africa Command and NATO, was to have been activated last year and to have provided brigades of an estimated 3,000 - 4,000 troops each for five regions in Africa: East, west, north, south and central. The West African brigade is to grow to 6,500 troops.

The role of ECOWAS military forces is to prepare the way forward and give an African cover to Western armed intervention in Africa."

Amid Rumours of Rebel Groups Unifying in Congo Countries in Region Discuss Joint Military Action

"As previously reported here, Rwanda, Burundi and the DRC met in Kigali last week to discuss the military situation in the eastern Congo. At the end of the meeting, they alleged that a new coalition of rebel groups had formed in Kivus region...Some sources familiar with the closed-door meeting suggest that the three countries were not just sharing information. Allegedly new joint military actions on Congolese soil are being discussed.."

Africa: Global NATO Seeks to Recruit 50 New Military Partners   - by Rick Rozoff  STOP NATO

"A recent article in Kenya's Africa Review cited sources in the African Union (AU) disclosing that the 28 member North Atlantic Treaty Organization is preparing to sign a military partnership treaty with the 53 nation AU.

The author of the article, relaying comments from AU officials in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where the organization has its headquarters, wrote that although 'the stated aim is to counter global security threats and specifically threats against Africa, some observers read the pact as aiming to counter Chinese expansion in Africa.."

N.Beltov N.Beltov's picture

Inter-imperial rivalry, specifically between the previously dominant states of the anglosphere (USA, UK, etc) and the rising influence of China is the barely spoken of undercurrent in many issues in African politics today, eg, Zimbabwe and the issues in the region of southern Africa. It seems like a modern day carving up of colonies in neo liberal disguise.

Ivory Coast and Libya, Dismantlement of International Law: A New Strategy of Global Elite

"The western media shower their audience with allegations that Gbagbo lost the 2010 elections and should therefore step down. Their key argument - the head of the elections commission declared Outterra the winner - ignores the fact that in the Ivory Coast it is up to the Constitutional Council, not the elections commission to decide who prevailed in the race over presidency, in case the outcome of the vote is called into question.

As for the Constitutional Council, it gave victory to Gbagbo, meaning that as of today, he is the legitimate president of the Ivory Coast and that the offensive meant to dislodge him is an outright aggression...Africa seems to have become a proving ground for suspicious novelties in the sphere of international law.."

ICTR-TPIR International Justice or Judicially Constructed Victors' Impunity

"The Director of the International Humanitarian Law Institute, Prof Peter Erlinder, announced the publication of a book-length research work by DePaul University Law School Journal for Social Justice today: The UN Ad Hoc Tribunal for Rwanda: International Justice or Judicially Constructed Victors' Impunity.

Based on previously unpublished UN and US government documents, in the nature of the Pentagon Papers or WikiLeaks exposures, the heavily footnoted narrative is based on documents only in evidence at the UN Tribunal for Rwanda, and published on the IHLI website:

The documents explain how the current RPF government became the dominant military power in the country more than a year before the Rwandan Genocide with the outside assistance from Uganda, UK and the Pentagon. The documents include sworn ICTR testimony of former RPF officers and members who testified that Paul Kagame ordered the assassination of the Presidents of Rwanda and Burundi on April 6, 1994 that touched off the mass violence predicted by the US Ambassador..."

John Pilger wrote:
The Euro-American attack on Libya has nothing to do with protecting anyone; only the terminally naive believe such nonsense. It is the West's response to popular uprisings in strategic, resource-rich regions of the world and the beginning of a war of attrition against the new imperial rival, China.

More on China ...

President Barack Obama's historical distinction is now guaranteed. He is America's first black president to invade Africa. His assault on Libya is run by the US Africa Command, which was set up in 2007 to secure the continent's lucrative natural resources from Africa's impoverished people and the rapidly spreading commercial influence of China. Libya, along with Angola and Nigeria, is China's principal source of oil.

Canada Mines African Discontent

by Linda McQuaig

While Canadians may think of ourselves as best known for owning the Olympic podium, among Africans we may actually be better known — and not particularly liked — for owning their natural resources.

Once beloved on the continent, Canada is no longer so fondly regarded in Africa.

The new, less enthusiastic view of Canada was vividly illustrated last month when more than 1,500 desperately poor Tanzanian villagers picked up machetes, rocks and hammers and stormed the mining compound of Canadian-owned African Barrick Gold.

The uprising — leading to the shooting deaths of seven of the villagers by police and security forces at the mine — is a startling reminder that theories widely held in the West about the benefits of foreign investment for the developing world are not always shared by people on the receiving end....

Obama Sends US Military Advisers to Help Track LRA's Kony  -  by Jim Lobe

"Africa under President Obama, is an expanding theatre of war for the United States. There are few points on the African map where the US military does not operate, independently, through proxies, or by agreement with local governments and militaries. AFRICOM has penetrated the armed forces of the continent to a degree no single European power could have ever aspired to.

Indeed, the US has so thoroughly infiltrated African armies, many if not most, would be of no use for national defense against the Americans. Meanwhile, the NATO attack on Libya threatens to set the whole northern tier of Africa ablaze, a pretext for further US and French operations..."

Non-Consensual Research in Africa: The Outsourcing of Tuskeegee

United States biomedical researchers and pharmaceutical companies are conducting and paying African doctors to conduct unethical and illegal testing of human subjects. Non-consensual research on human subjects is an atrocity that occurred in Tuskegee, Alabama, and in Guatemala for over forty years. Once outlawed in the U.S., medical researchers began experimenting on thousands of human research subjects without their consent in Cameroon, Ghana, Namibia, Nigeria, Uganda, South Africa, Zimbabwe and other African countries.

Believing they were receiving routine medical care, some African women and children were used to test medication for HIV, malaria, and meningitis, often resulting in infection, and/or even death. These unethical research practices coupled with the failure to get signed informed consent violate multiple U.S. and international laws.

General Strike Rocks Nigeria  -  by Matt Swagler

"...A GENERAL strike has brought business and transportation in key Nigerian cities to a complete standstill over the past week. Millions of Nigerians have refused to work in protest over the government's decision to cut a state gasoline subsidy. The SIGNIFICANCE of a general strike in Nigeria cannot be overemphasized. It is the most populous country in Africa..

The LOSS of the gasoline subsidy is seen as particularly outrageous in a country that is the world's sixth largest supplier of crude oil--producing nearly as much as countries like Kuiwait..

In addition to controlling the Niger Delta, the US government is now talking about a new fron in the 'war on terror' -- against an amorphous Islamist group in Nigeria called Boko Haram...
