NEARLY SEVENTY YEARS ago, in the course of World War II, a heinous crime was committed in the city of Leningrad. For more than a thousand days, a gang of extremists called “the Red Army” held the millions of the town’s inhabitants hostage and provoked retaliation from the German Wehrmacht from inside the population centers. The Germans had no alternative but to bomb and shell the population and to impose a total blockade, which caused the death of hundreds of thousands.

Access to Gaza's new cemetery near the Israeli border has been cut off, forcing Palestinians to bury the increasing number of dead in old graves near the city center, Palestinians told Haaretz Saturday.
Gaza's morgues are filled with bodies not yet identified by relatives, many of whom cannot travel to claim and bury their dead.

Ramallah residents were shocked on Friday when a protest against the Israeli offensive in Gaza was forcibly dispersed by Palestinian Authority security forces using tear gas and clubs. Youth from the Fatah movement assisted security forces in breaking up a rally of solidarity with the Palestinian faction's rival Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

At 8:45 A.M. Sunday, Mustafa called to say they had left their house. At 8:10 they had called a courageous friend who had a car, and they drove with the kids two kilometers north, to the rented apartment of his brother-in-law in the Gaza City neighborhood of Rimal. The brother-in-law rented it a week ago, after he fled with his family from their home in the northern edge of the city, the site of bombing and shooting. Now there are 15 people in a two-room apartment - with no water, of course. The main thing is that the explosions sound a little less loud.

You can almost sense embarassment on the part of CBC radio journalists everytime they interview a Palestinian-Canadian (especially those who just escaped the carnage). Listening to their stories makes it painfully obvious that the horror and deprivation are far from an exaggeration.
A number of Palestinians - it is not clear how many - are trapped in small enclaves surrounded by Israel Defense Forces positions in the Gaza Strip's peripheral farming areas. The soldiers shoot at anyone who tries to leave the enclaves, they said.

History did not begin with the Qassam rockets. But for us, the Israelis, history always begins when the Palestinians hurt us, and then the pain is completely decontextualized. We think that if we cause the Palestinians much greater pain, they will finally learn their lesson. Some term this "achievement."

USA: Virtually the Entire Dem-Controlled Congress Supports Israel's War Crimes in Gaza
By Stephen Zunes, AlterNet
Posted on January 13, 2009
In a direct challenge to the credibility of Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the International Red Cross and other reputable humanitarian organizations, an overwhelming bipartisan majority in both houses of Congress has gone on record supporting President George W. Bush's position that the Israeli armed forces bear no responsibility for the large and growing numbers of civilian casualties from their assault on the Gaza Strip.
As of this writing, at least 400 civilians have been killed by Israeli forces, primarily using U.S.-supplied weaponry.
Shattering hopes that an expanded Democratic congressional majority and a new Democratic administration might lead to a more moderate foreign policy, the resolutions put forward an extreme reinterpretation of international humanitarian law, apparently designed to exonerate nations with superior firepower from any liability for inflicting large-scale civilian casualties. (...)
The earth shaking under your feet, clouds of choking smoke, explosions like a fireworks display, bombs bursting into all-consuming flames that cannot be extinguished with water, mushroom clouds of pinkish-red smoke, suffocating gas, harsh burns on the skin, extraordinary maimed live and dead bodies.

Marc Garlasco worked at the Pentagon for seven years: "I did the air targeting, target recommendations, telling people in central command where to drop the bombs during the war in Iraq" - and before that in Kosovo. He lost many colleagues in the Al-Qaida attack on the Defense Department on September 11, 2001. At the Pentagon they asked him to examine whether there was a connection between Al-Qaida and Saddam Hussein. "I knew there wasn't," he says, "because my job was to track Saddam Hussein's moves."

169 YEARS before the Gaza War, Heinrich Heine wrote a premonitory poem of 12 lines, under the title “To Edom”. The German-Jewish poet was talking about Germany, or perhaps all the nations of Christian Europe. This is what he wrote (in my rough translation):

Tens of thousands of people thronged through Gaza's streets yesterday morning. Many left their relatives' houses and the schools where they had been staying for the last two or three weeks, after having been forced to flee the bombing of their homes and neighborhoods and the Israel Defense Forces' advance. They came out to check whether their homes were still standing, or to try to save something from among the rubble of those houses that were destroyed.

Some Palestinian casualties in the Gaza Strip were wounded by a new type of weapon that even doctors with previous experience in war zones do not recognize, according to Dr. Erik Fosse, a Norwegian cardiologist who worked at Gaza's Shifa Hospital for 11 days, during Operation Cast Lead.
However, he added in a telephone conversation from Oslo, most casualties were people hit by shrapnel from conventional explosives.

The economic damage to the Gaza Strip as a result of Israel's three-week offensive is estimated at $1.9 billion, according to the Palestinian Statistical Authority in Ramallah. The estimate includes the value of destroyed structures, the anticipated cost of clearing away debris, and the damage caused to ongoing economic activity in the Strip.

Hassan, an 8-year-old Gazan boy, could consider himself lucky. Last year, thanks to his serious illness, Israel let him in to be treated in a Tel Aviv hospital. Israel boasts of its generosity: after four decades of occupation, which has left Gaza's hospitals on a Third World level, followed by years of siege, which has exhausted the little equipment and medicine arsenal those wretched hospitals had acquired, Israel grants treatment to a small number of mostly terminal Palestinian patients, provided the full cost is paid by the Palestinian National Authority. How very generous indeed.

I just finished listening to Anna Maria Tremonti talking to someone from the Israeli "resistance" group, Peace Now.
This person said he'd like to have peace, but the massacre in Gaza was justified because Isralis need to have security. In other words, murdering hundreds of Arabs is reasonable if it prevents Israeli anxiety about rocket attacks (this, of course, if one actually believes the Gaza massacre was provoked by Hamas rockets in the first place).
I've posted elsewhere that between 96 and 98% of Israelis are in favour of the attack on the Gaza Ghetto. Israelis are almost unanimous in their support for war against Arabs.
My question, in light of this, is how can anyone say "All Hail the Israeli Resistance" with a straight face?
There is no Israeli resistance.

This thread is meant to contain articles and video clips about the Israeli peace movement, and the activists within it. If people keep treating it as a regular topic, it will become clogged with conversation and will not be able to serve its purpose.
If you want to post a topic that is critical of the Israeli peace camp (and there's quite a bit of criticism that can be leveled at it), then do that, just don't do it in this thread.

At 1 P.M. on Monday, January 5, 2009, near Rajib Mughrabi's garage on Saladin Street, in the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City, a man of about 60 was pushing an elderly woman in a wheelbarrow. A 15-year-old boy walked at their side, waving a white cloth. Behind them, some 80 people were walking northward, their hands in the air. The day before, during Israel Defense Forces advances under cover of heavy fire, Palestinian inhabitants began their great flight westward, inward, into the Strip's urban centers. If they thought they were in the soldiers' line of sight, they waved white flags and raised their hands aloft.
The man pushing the wheelbarrow was Mouin Joha, his mother was sitting inside and his son Ibrahim accompanied them bearing the flag.

Ms Tantalus
TANTALUS IS punished by the Gods for reasons that are not entirely clear. He is hungry and thirsty, but the water in which he stands recedes when he bends down to drink from it and the fruit above his head continually evades his hand.
Tzipi Livni is now undergoing a similar torture. After winning an impressive personal victory at the polls, the political fruit keeps slipping from her grasp when she stretches out her hand.
Why should she deserve that? What has she done, after all? Supported the war, called for a boycott of Hamas, played around with empty negotiations with the Palestinian Authority? OK, she has indeed.. But such a terrible punishment?

If there were a Nobel Prize for Hypocrisy, Abraham Foxman would have been a great candidate. The director of the Anti-Defamation League, who once interpreted even International Holocaust Remembrance Day as an expression of the Gentiles' latent desire to see Jews dead, has published a new survey on anti-Semitism in Europe [.pdf]. One of the assertions respondents were asked to agree or disagree with was "Jews are more loyal to Israel than to this country"; an affirmative response was considered indicative of anti-Semitism.
