Argentine Soccer Team Cancels Match With Israel Over Gaza Killings

The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement enjoyed its greatest success when Argentina’s national soccer team decided to cancel its friendly match against Israel’s national team, in protest against the recent killings of protesting Palestinians. We speak to the award-winning Palestinian journalist Daoud Kuttab.

Israel To Ask FIFA to Ban Argentina From World Cup Over 'Religious Discrimination' After Canceled Match

The Football Federation of Israel and the company in charge of organizing the now-canceled friendly match between Argentina and Israel will demand FIFA expel the Argentine team from the 2018 World Cup in Russia due to alleged “religious discrimination.”

The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a blatant sports diplomacy move, unsuccessfully called Argentine President Mauricio Macri to try and convince the national team to play the friendly match. Macri, according to The Times of Israel, told Netanyahu he had no control over their decision.

In fact, it was AFA's President Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia who made the decision. “The ones calling us ignorant are underestimating us because this conflict has been going on for more than 70 years. What happened in the last few hours led us to take this decision...” said Tapia in a press conference after multiple protests against the match.

“I hope you all can understand the decision I took as a contribution to world peace. Football goes beyond religions, sexes... and has nothing to do with violence...” he continued.

Why do Canadians applaud the cancellation of the Argentine-Israel 'friendly' game yet ignore the continuing violation of BDS by their own?

Canadian Federation of Students endorses BDS

The Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) endorsed the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement on Monday and condemned the “ongoing occupation of Palestine.”

The endorsement followed a decision on the same day by Airbnb to stop listing rentals in West Bank settlements and a vote by the Quakers in Britain to divest from firms profiting from business activity over the pre-1967 lines.

The CFS resolved to support BDS activity including approving financial donations of up to $500 to any single pro-Palestinian organizations. The organization of more than half-a-million members, which has 64 member unions across Canada, also condemned Israeli “atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza and [reaffirmed] the Federation’s commitment to BDS and anti-war organizing.”....

…by Jonas E. Alexis

The Quakers, commonly known as the Society of Friends, are rising against Israeli Apartheid. They have stated that they will stop doing business with any company that “profits from the occupation” in Gaza and the West Bank.

Paul Parker, a spokesperson for the Quakers in Britain, declared:

“Our long history of working for a just peace in Palestine and Israel has opened our eyes to the many injustices and violations of international law arising from the military occupation of Palestine by the Israeli government.

“With the occupation now in its 51st year, and with no end in near sight, we believe we have a moral duty to state publicly that we will not invest in any company profiting from the occupation.

“As Quakers, we seek to live out our faith through everyday actions, including the choices we make about where to put our money. We believe strongly in the power of legitimate, nonviolent, democratic tools such as morally responsible investment to realize positive change in the world. We want to make sure our money and energies are instead put into places which support our commitments to peace, equality and justice.”[1]

A children’s speech pathologist who has worked for the last nine years with developmentally disabled, autistic, and speech-impaired elementary school students in Austin, Texas, has been told she can no longer work with the public school district after she refused to sign an oath vowing that she “does not” and “will not” engage in a boycott of Israel or “otherwise tak[e] any action that is intended to inflict economic harm” on that foreign nation. A lawsuit on her behalf was filed early Monday morning in a federal court in the Western District of Texas alleging a violation of her First Amendment right of free speech.

Meet the Texas Speech Pathologist Who Lost School Job for Refusing to Sign Pro-Israel, Anti-BDS Oath

BAHIA AMAWI: The point of boycotting any product that supports Israel is to put pressure on the Israeli government to change its treatment, the inhumane treatment, of the Palestinian people. Having grown up as a Palestinian, I know firsthand the oppression and the struggle that Palestinians face on a daily basis.

You know, I have to set an example for my kids. We’ve got to stand up for what’s the justice and for rights and equal opportunity for everybody and humane conditions. And so, for me, it was an easy decision in that aspect. You know, so I could not sign it. I was forced to depart from my job because I will not sign it, and I cannot return back if I don’t sign it.

I have been here in the States for over 30 years. I’m an American citizen. I follow the law. And so, I have the luxury of having these rights, which many people in other countries do not have. It infringed on all my principles and, on top of that, my right to speech and also right to protest. It’s baffling that they can throw this down our throats, you know, and decide to protect another country’s economy versus protect our constitutional rights.

BAHIA AMAWI: Yes, this is a public school, and I have been contracting with them for around nine years. And every year I get a contract that’s exactly a duplicate of the year before. And this year I got it, as well, the contract, at the initial start of my month, which is August, when school begins. And so I signed the initial contract. It was exactly the same as I sign every year.

But then, later on, a few weeks later, my speech coordinator contacted me and said, “Well, Bahia, we have additional papers this year. This is brand new. And we need people to sign it.” So, when I received the papers, I looked through it. It was about maybe a stack of four sheets of paper with a bunch of new compliances and new codes. They appeared to be normal, job-related issues, like background history, criminal history, you know, equal opportunity employment, until I came across the one that has nothing to do with my job, which is Code 2270.001 of the Texas Government Code. And that one, I was reading it, and it states that currently—the contractor must affirm that it currently does not or will not boycott Israel, and basically, in short, causing any economic harm. So, that’s when I noticed it.

And right away I sent an email immediately, and I stopped even reading the additional codes. And I sent the email to my speech coordinator telling her, “Listen, I cannot sign this. This is against my principles, against my constitutional rights. And it’s also against my moral and ethical values, considering that I am a Palestinian American and I have family that actually live in the Occupied Territories, so it affects me personally, as well.” So, it affects me in both ways—as an American citizen and as a Palestinian American, too.

She was kind enough. We have a really good relationship with her. And I’ve known—like I said, I’ve known everybody for nine years, so I have a really good relationship with everybody at the school district. And she tried to—”Let me see if I can go around it.” After two weeks, she returned back to me and apologized and said, “I’m really sorry, Bahia, but they said they will not pay you if you do not sign this part of the new compliances.” And so I kind of had to, you know, forcefully leave at that moment and couldn’t return.

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute Reinstates Award for Angela Davis After Public Outcry

Back in the U.S., the board of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute has voted to reaffirm leading activist and civil rights icon Angela Davis as the recipient of its Fred L. The institute withdrew the award days after the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center sent a letter urging the board to reconsider honoring Davis due to her support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. The decision was met with widespread condemnation. The board offered a public apology for the move earlier this month.

Irish lower house passes bill to ban Israeli settlement goods

The Israeli foreign ministry has reprimanded Ireland's ambassador Alison Kelly after the lower house of Irish parliament voted in favour of a bill that will ban the purchase of goods and services from the illegal Israeli settlements.

In a statement, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was a shame that Ireland "condemns the only democratic state in the Middle East".

"Israel is outraged over the legislation against it in the Irish parliament, which is indicative of hypocrisy and anti-Semitism," the statement said.

Last December, the upper house of the Irish parliament, the Seanad, voted in favour of the decision despite attempts by the United States, European powers and Israel to thwart it.

The bill, put forward by independent Irish Senator Frances Black, seeks to ban the import or sale of goods produced by settlements in the occupied West Bank.

It was then passed on to the Dail, the lower house of Irish parliament, by Senator Niall Collins from the largest opposition party, the Fianna Fail.

On Thursday, the Dail overwhelmingly backed the bill by a vote of 78-45.

Jewish Activists Hold Solidarity Shabbat Defending Angela Davis in Birmingham & Across U.S.

AMY GOODMAN: You mentioned, as you were blessing the bread and the candles and the challah, the bread, that Angela Davis embodied your Jewish ideals. Can you explain that?

JESSE SCHAFFER: Yeah. I was raised in the context of historic Jewish oppression and harnessing our historic peoplehood, and that the greatest way to utilize that is to understand that our struggles are linked—right?—that we are more powerful when we understand that our oppression and our liberations are linked. And so, for me, Angela Davis is a direct expression of those values, and she has always understood that our historic struggles are linked, whether it’s Palestinians, it’s black folks in the South, Jewish folks—really, any struggle for justice—that they’re all linked and that we’re stronger together.

Angela Davis Returns to Birmingham, Reflecting on Palestinian Rights & Fight for Freedom Everywhere

ANGELA DAVIS: And so, Jewish Voice for Peace has done an amazing job over the last years bringing people together all over, all over the country. So when I heard about this Shabbat, I said—well, first of all, it made me feel really humble—

ANGELA DAVIS: —because I’m—you know, I don’t really think of myself as being special. No, hold on for a second. Let me say what I have to say. Let me say what I have to say. I think that a lot of work that has been accomplished by organizations and movements and huge numbers of people gets projected onto individuals.

ANGELA DAVIS: I know we often assume that when we speak of the civil rights movement, immediately who comes to mind?

IMANI PERRY: Right. King.

ANGELA DAVIS: Dr. King. And, of course, Dr. King was a powerful figure. But he did not create the civil rights movement.

IMANI PERRY: Right, right.

ANGELA DAVIS: And I think, particularly at this moment in our history, when we are so influenced by the neoliberal ideologies of global capitalism, we have to figure out ways in which we can contest this individualism—

IMANI PERRY: That’s right.

ANGELA DAVIS: —that shapes the way we think about the world.

ANGELA DAVIS: So, what I want to say is that I’m happy, I’m happy to be here, but I think it’s important that you know that I am simply standing in for the work that was done by vast numbers of people, thousands and millions of people all over the country and all over the world. And so, that is how I—that is how I read the Shabbat.

ANGELA DAVIS: And the slogan, “Angela, sister, you are welcome in this house”—”Angela, sister, you are welcome in this Shabbat” comes from a slogan that was used on many posters all over the country when I was underground fleeing the FBI. So, people put up these posters on their doors: “Angela, sister, you are welcome in this house.”

And you have to realize that the only reason people are familiar with my name and my history today is because people did that work of organizing the movement to save my life back in the 19—1970. Well, it started in 1969, when Ronald Reagan fired me from my job, but—you know, I don’t know why I always end up in the middle of these situations. I really—I really never asked to be at the center of it all. I was very happy to be organizing on the sidelines and doing the work to promote someone else. But somehow or another—I have no idea.

Federal Court Of Canada Rules Against Labelling Settlement Wines “Product Of Israel”

July 29, 2019

OTTAWA — Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV) applauds Dr. David Kattenburg for his successful application to the Federal Court of Canada for a judicial review in the matter of wines sold in Canada that are labelled “Product of Israel” despite their being produced in Israel’s illegal West Bank settlements. The Federal Court agreed with Dr. Kattenburg’s position that these labels are “false, misleading and deceptive” and that, “as such, they contravene the requirements of subsection 7(1) of the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act and subsection 5(1) of the Food and Drugs Act.”

IJV is proud to have intervened in Dr. Kattenburg’s case at the judicial review hearing in May 2019 after having been granted intervenor status by the Court. IJV was considered to have sufficient knowledge of and familiarity with the labelling of products made in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, while B’nai Brith Canada’s simultaneous application for intervenor status was denied on the basis that they did not possess any such expertise.

The Liberal government knows which side it supports in the occupied territories. Here is a piece showing the views of many of Canada's most prominent Jewish organizations. I think they are convinced that Palestinians should be treated like they are Canaanites in the Book of Joshua. Imagine the discrimination experienced by the Israelis in the West Bank, oy vey the suffering they have to endure.

Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) applauded the decision to appeal the ruling as well.

“The Federal Court ruling was deeply problematic and we are very pleased that the Attorney General will be moving forward with an appeal,” said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo.

“There is nothing misleading labelling a wine as a product of Israel if it is produced by Israelis in an area controlled by Israel,” Benlolo said. “We are hopeful that the Court of Appeal will overturn the ruling, which we feel effectively discriminates against Israelis in the West Bank.”

Please don't confuse "Jewish" with "fanatically pro-Israel". I don't want to hear that Jared Kushner is "one of America's most prominent Jews". Just as a for instance.
