BSL-4 Labs

This does appear to merit a thorough investigation to get to the bottom of it. If there is nothing to hide China should welcome it.

Former Liberal justice minister urges sanctions against Chinese officials who covered up early COVID-19 outbreak

US officials were reportedly concerned that safety breaches at a Wuhan lab studying coronaviruses in bats could cause a pandemic

  • Amid questions about the origin of the novel coronavirus outbreak, diplomatic cables obtained by The Washington Post showed that US officials had sounded the alarm about possible safety breaches at a lab in Wuhan, China.
  • The diplomats and scientists were worried about the safety of the lab's research on coronaviruses in animals like bats as early as January 2018.
  • The Post said they warned that sloppy safety protocols for handling contagious viruses in the lab "represented a risk of a new SARS-like pandemic."
  • While there is no evidence to suggest that the virus was created in a lab as a bioweapon, the diplomatic cables shine more light on a theory that the virus leaked out of the lab by accident.

Where Did This Coronavirus Originate? Virus Hunters Find Genetic Clues In Bats

Given that some China's earliest COVID-19 patients were connected to the Hunan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, it is likely the seafood market played a role in amplifying the virus. However, there is not enough evidence to prove that is where the virus transmitted from animals to humans. There is also evidence emerging that among the first 41 patients hospitalized in China, 13 had no connection to this particular marketplace. The path of the pathogen is still unknown.

We are still looking for evidence that this was anything other than a natural evolution.

This emphasis on a Chinese accident has all the appearance of being pushed due to a Trump deflection campaign. And there is more evidence of that than that anything actually happened.

On this site we should not be encouraging a blinkered study such as what this thread aims to do.

We should be encouraging widespread judicial enquiries wherever possible about what all governments have done instead of a focus on deflection where guilty governments point the finger at others.

I do not support ANY government or trust ANY of them in this. There is ample reason to examine the roles of each government.

A problem with this thread here in Canada is that we have the least control and influence over the Chinese government. So why would we open up a thread dealing exclusively with examination into them?

You really want a Chinese examination? - let's stop being hypocrites and start at home. Let's call for examinations of our own government's mistakes -- including management of stockpile, decisions that were lagging far slower than the movement of the virus, the scandal of the failure to protect and monitor care homes -- and more. Get these examinations and we have the moral authority to demand them from the US and then China. When it comes to the origins - let there be an examination into that before we launch into a claim about an accident that has no founding to this point. We are more likely to get that examination if we enter it with an open mind. We might persuade China into participating if we offered to do so without judgment or blame.

I am sorry but at the moment this thread stinks of a desire to scapegoat, to deflect from other serious things what the people need to know about their own governments. In attacking another government far from us it stinks of racism, projection and an attack on internationalism. An attack on other countries who really are not more at fault than Canada (given the hypothesis of accident) is damaging. Canada is not without blame for serious mistakes here despite warnings sicne it did not start here. These are not less serious than the errors China made when it comes to blame -- even if a Chinese accident could have caused the whole difference. There is a difference between the seriousness of the error morally and the effect of it. If this had natural sources, we want to trace it in China. Blaming them at the start is one way to take us out of the conversation.

Without giving any tangible benefits (given how little leverage there is for such a directed and focused inuiry), such a call, without including ourselves strikes at the heart of the potential for any international cooperation. It may serve to deflect here but ultimately it serves to reduce the chance that we learn what we want to about the source. It advances a hostile hypothesis prior to having an open examination of the origins of the virus.

I have taken the tactic here of refuting this push for an investigation rather than responding with anger about what appears to be behind it because I want you to consider the politics behind what you are calling for and the implications of such a stance. I do so becuase I know there is fear and anger at the virus which is hurting us. But it is unacceptable to direct this without being lead by science and a desire to make a difference in human knowledge about this -- and a understanding of the need to start our learning where we can get the greatest benefit - at home.. No blame China focus can do this.

I am not attacking you here North. Please consider all of this.

Excellent article. I hope you read the entire thing and no just the headline. It blows up the blame China focus of this thread and this demand for inquiry. I encourage you to read it and produce a much more balanced call for an inquiry into the responses of all governments and an inquiry into the origin -- which due to the way the virus appears points to a natural selection due to evolution within animals and not an escape from a research centre.

What we need here are balanced and complete inquiries not attempts at blame and deflection.

Our frustration with USA policies has meant that China has been getting a free pass and this needs to stop. China is a giant bully just like the USA. A good analogy is US involvement in Latin America and China's involvement in the South China Sea.

Sorry North, this is false. China has been subjected to one unproven conspiracy theory after another - even on this site. It has been faced with massive volumes of racism as have anyone in North America with an Asian face. You want to balance things look to our own govenrment to set the standard for unbiased inquiry. Then call that other countries do the same. You do not need to call them out by name when you do not ahve direct evidence that something happened like you ahve here. You have evidence of an accusation of la safety and have amplified this into proof of risk and then proof something happened. This is not giving a free pass or even a fair and balanced approach to investigation.

Just to reiterate, there is no current basis in fact for the claim that COVID-19 originated in a Chinese lab and everry indication that it is a natural occurence. And it has been pointed out that a lot of baseless racist and ideological crap has been spread about China and COVID-19.  Rampant speculation and conspiracy theory during a pandemic is irresponsible so let's try to stick with the evolving facts as we know them.

In the last two decades the US, with Canada as its cat's claw, has aided and abetted coups in Haiti, Honduras, Ecuador, Venezuela and Bolivia. I guess I missed the Chinese backed coups in the AESEAN countries. China is claiming the rights to small islands not overthrowing democratically elected left wing governments.

Remarks of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Canada on Some Canadian Media's Groundless Accusations Against and Stigmatization of China

"Recently, chiming in with a certain number of US politicians, some Canadian media have been politicizing the epidemic of COVID-19, labeling the virus and stigmatizing China...It is shameful to see increasing acts of prejudice as we fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Debunking Some Ideas About the Virus

https://t.co/BjwGovmaKP?amp=1

"We still do not know for certain where the virus that causes the current pandemic comes from. China's first known COVID-19 case has now been traced back to mid November. While the virus is most likely a natural creation, US State Department officials now point to alleged insecurities at the safety level 4 laboratory in Wuhan which did research on similar viruses. But the US itself has many such laboratories with long documented security issues and there is reasonable suspicion that the real patient zero case happened in the US.

Science will eventually solve that conundrum. Until it does there is little to gain from further speculation about it. There is a loose group of people who think that the current pandemic is some conspiracy with a nefarious purpose. It is probably a waste of time to counter the arguments of such people. But I will give it a try..."
