"Chinese Trust Prostitutes More Than Politicians, Scientists"

Prostitutes are considered more trustworthy in China than government officials and scientists, a recent survey of more than 3,000 respondents showed.

The online survey of 3,376 Chinese showed that 7.9 percent of respondents considered sex workers trustworthy, putting them in third place after farmers and religious workers, the Insight China magazine said on its website.

"A list like this is at the same time surprising and embarrassing," the China Daily said Tuesday in an editorial, commenting on the result of the survey, which was carried out in June and July.

The newspaper said the list showed scientists and teachers ranked "way below, and that government functionaries, too, scored hardly better."

Soldiers and students were ranked after sex workers on the list of trustworthy professions, the Insight China magazine said.

"Given the constant feed of scandals involving the country's elite, this is not bad at all," the China Daily editorial commented.

"At least (the scientists and officials) have not slid into the least credible category which consists of real estate developers, secretaries, agents, entertainers and directors."

Soldiers came in fourth place.

Given that less than 8% of people trusted the third highest group it sounds like nobody trusts anybody much.

This doesn't sound like a stable society to me.

The 10th edition of the study, conducted by research firm StrategyOne on behalf of the global public relations company Edelman, surveyed 4,475 respondents between 25 and 64 in 20 countries. The 30-minute interviews were conducted in November and December of 2008, concurrent with a worldwide economic downturn that soured public trust in business and government leaders in many countries.

Canadians institutions, however, were relatively insulated from this drop in public opinion. For example, while the percentage of U.S. respondents who said they trusted business to do what is right fell to 38% from 58% a year ago, Canadians’ trust in business fell just 4%, to 45% from 49%.

An even larger contrast appeared when respondents were asked to rate their trust in government to do what was right. Only 30% of U.S. respondents answered positively, compared to 39% in 2008. In Canada, trust in government actually increased to 51% from 39% the year before.

Canada is also one of only seven countries (of the 20 in the survey) in which government is more trusted than business, with 51% indicating trust in public officials and 45% in business leaders.

I think it is likely about the promises. Most politicians and scientists say trust me I won't screw you but they often do. A prostitute on the other hand says trust me I will screw you and they usually do.
