Finally the Process to Impeach President Donald Trump begins

Woo! Hoo!

alan smithee alan smithee's picture

Was Pelosi given the boot? She's been protecting him all this time. Impeachment should have happened months ago. Do you have a link to verify this?

NorthReport

The cynical part of me says that Pelosi is going ahead with impeachment proceedings now, is to help Biden who may be floundering in the polls, win the Democratic nomination, because of the reasons she just gave for impeaching the President.

And back to reality - there is the minor issue of a Republician controlled Senate that would need to agree before the Presdident is impeached, but things can change on a dime in politics, and if Republicians think they can't win with Trump, then watch out!!!  Time will be everything.

In an interview with The National Interest, Joe Lauria put this episode in context:

“’It was in February [2014] when Yanukovych was overthrown, and just a few months later (in May), Joe Biden’s son and a close friend of John Kerry’s stepson, they both join the board of this Ukrainian gas company. And the name of that was Burisma Holdings,’” said Joe Lauria, editor of Consortium News and a former correspondent for the Wall Street Journal. “’So just after an American-backed coup, you have Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden and this John Kerry family friend joining the board of probably the largest private gas producer in Ukraine. They installed the new government, and as the bounty of this coup, Joe Biden’s son personally profited. He would not have gotten that job if Yanukovych was still in power,’” Lauria told The National Interest.”

...yes let's focus on Trump's antics and possible impeachment...not the total corruption of the establishment candidate for the Democrats...Biden is toast!

Nobody is defending Biden.

Trump committed a very serious crime and FINALLY the Democrats are going to impeach the motherfucker.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/trump-froze-400m-aid-ukraine-before-zelenskiy-call-1.5295327

I agree with NR's cynicism of the sudden motivation by Pelosi. I hate Biden...I could run down a laundry list of things that make him terrible.

That said, I want the Democrats to win the Holuse and Senate and make the Repuglicans sit down and shut up. I can't wait for that Orange Fascist Criminal to be turfed from the Presidency. I don't care how. By vote or otherwise.

NorthReport

Maybe this is like getting Al Capone. Capone died in jail because of tax evasion, not for killing people, etc. Maybe they will get President Trump on this, as opposed to rigging the election with Russia, etc.

NorthReport

Oh come on, Trump is in very serious trouble here. He may survive the impeachment process because of the Republician controlled Senate, but everyone knows he is never up to any good........

The difference between Biden and Trump in this case is that Biden's grift is the approved kind, which all members of the U.S. ruling class partake in. After all, putting Hunter Biden on the board of a Ukrainian gas company is no more corrupt than putting Chelsea Clinton on the board of Expedia, or Meghan McCain on the cast of The View. No talent nobodies get degrees from prestigious universities, followed by big money, high prestige jobs because of who their parents are.

Trump, on the other hand, tried to strong arm a foreign leader to help him politically by withholding money that had been appropriated by congress. Both are bad, but Trump's behaviour is unacceptable to the ruling class, whereas Biden's is perfectly fine. Honour among thieves?

NorthReport

If I'm reading this correctly there is slim chance of impeachment but....

Explainer: how the process of impeaching a U.S. president works

The Republican majority in the Senate could vote to immediately dismiss the charges against Trump without considering evidence.

No president has ever been removed as a direct result of impeachment. One, President Richard Nixon, resigned in 1974 before he could be impeached. Two, Presidents Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Clinton, were impeached by the House, but not convicted by the Senate.

Who becomes president if Trump is removed?

In the unlikely event the Senate convicted Trump, Vice President Mike Pence would become president for the remainder of Trump’s term, which ends on Jan. 20, 2021.

Is there another way to remove a president?

Under the Constitution’s 25th Amendment, a president can be replaced by their vice president if the chief executive becomes unable to do the job, such as due to a disabling medical or mental condition. That process begins with the vice president and a majority of the members of the Cabinet notifying Congress that the president is not capable of performing the job.

Interesting perspective.

But it's election time coming in the US.

All hail the mighty coin toss. The US presidential elections!

josh

The only news out of this is that Pelosi officially signed off.  There's already a judiciary committee impeachment investigation that's going at a snail's pace.  If Pelosi really wanted to advance impeachment, she would have created a special committte to investigate the charges and hold hearings.  There's less here than meets the eye.

It's not just Ukraine.  There are numerous other grounds to impeach Trump.  This is relatively minor in comparison.  But it was sort of the straw that broke the camel's back in terms of reluctant Dems signing off on it.

Biden's son never should have been on that board while his father was VP.  There's influence peddling on both sides.  But a sitting president attempting to strong arm a foreign country into investigating an opponent is separate and far more serious, constitutionally, than a family member's conflict of interest.

A whistleblower’s complaint about President Trump’s conduct towards Ukraine prompted the Justice Department’s inspector general to send a criminal referral to the Justice Department, a DOJ spokesperson revealed on Wednesday. However, the Department decided not to act on the referral.

I'm not ready to bet big bucks, but I estimate there is a 50% chance of this ending exactly the same as Clinton's impeachment. I think that the house will pass the articles of impeachment, with very few if any Republican votes. Then the senate will probably hold a trial and find Trump not guilty, with a few Republicans voting to convict, but not enough to reach two thirds. The other possibility is that Mitch McConnell will not hold a trial at all, but just ignore the articles passed by the house. That way, Republican senators won't have to each take a position on Trump's guilt or innocence.

Misfit Misfit's picture

The Republicans control the Senate but not by enough votes to fool around with unless some Democratic senators in red states vote against impeachment out of fear of being defeated in the 2020 election.

I think that too much time will pass before it reaches a senate vote. I think that the Democratic Party wants Trump on the Republican ticket because he is so polarizing and another Republican presidential candidate would be harder to defeat if at all.

I see no 'there there' on Trump but I do think the Dems may have just thrown Joe Biden under this bus.

The objectively pro-Trump crowd is at it again.

You mean Russiagate, where the Russians hacked the Democrats and passed on information to damage Clinton and the Democrats, which led to Mueller making numerous indictments?

House Democrats Launch Formal Impeachment Inquiry Against Trump

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2019/09/25/impe-s25.html

"The line-up of Pelosi, Brennan and the CIA Democrats gives a glimpse of the real forces at work in the conflict with the ruling elite and the dominant role played by the intelligence agencies in the US political program...

The events in Ukraine actually demonstrate a considerable degree of agreement between the rival factions in the ruling elite. Both support the US government bullying weaker countries, with Biden traveling to Ukraine in 2016 to threaten the withholding of $1 billion in US aid, and Trump actually witholding a lesser sum this year.

Both endorse arming the fascist-backed government in Kiev against Ukrainian workers and against Russia, an ongoing policy of American imperialism. And both accept relatives of top US leaders cashing in on their family connections as Hunter Biden did in Ukraine and China and the Trump family now does globally.

There are significant differences, but these concern the tactics and targeting of US imperialist policy, not whether the US should throw its weight around all over the world. The Democrat-aligned faction of the US ruling elite seeks to maintain the vociferously anti-Russian axis of foreign policy in the Middle East and Eastern Europe adopted in the second term of the Obama administration, while Trump has focused on a more confrontational approach toward China.

These divisions underly the anti-Russia campaign that the Democrats waged throughout the first two years of the Trump administration, with the bogus claim that Trump owed his presidency to Russian 'meddling' in the 2016 elections or that he was a direct stooge of Moscow. It is not at all certain which side in the conflict within the ruling elite has the upper hand. But it is absolutely clear neither the Democrats, aligned with the CIA and Pentagon, nor the Republicans, being molded by Trump into an ultra-right and personalist formation of a distinctly fascistic character, offer any alternative to the working class..."
