Zionism is the belief that the Jews should have their own nation-state in the region of Palestine. No more, no less....

thanks for your reasonable assessment....my suggestion is for you to read carefully statements of the Israeli leadership...Israel´s intention is for a greater Israel re their biblical interpretations...so e.g. their close collaborations with the Kurds in Syria and Iraq, their coordination of Syrian oil through Turkey for processing in Israel...etc...lots of documentation

Um, okay. It's still a bit of a strectch to go from "Zionism supports projecting Israeli power beyond the literal borders of Palestine" to "Zionism dictates the policies of the US Federal Reserve."

I agree with you on this.......who is behind the private cabal of the elites should be investigated in detail...this should be our work *Know thy enemy.*  As I agree with the above libertarian article to a large degree, not totally, the enemy is not Trump, just a puppet of the enemy, a distraction...and I do agree with Josh...Trump is a lyer, as was Obama ad nauseum
This is the kind of puppet they need, who can slither out of challenge to the control system.

Experts were unable to name any other recent case of a member of the American armed forces receiving a presidential pardon for a violent crime committed in uniform, except for one granted by Mr. Trump in May. And it was strikingly unusual, they said, to clear a soldier of murder charges before the case is tried.

Megh you could be right but I'n thinking the House will vote to send it to the Senate for trial and the Senate will not convict... just like Clinton.  some Republicans are starting to realize Trump is a sinking ship but I doubt that is enough to cross party lines to vote to convict.

Either way this is going to wreck the Republican party for a long time.

I would add that if I were a member of the House of Representatives, I would feel that my oath demanded that I vote to impeach Trump if I believed he had committed impeachable offenses, regardless of political fallout. That may be one reason why I could never have been a successful politician.

This is the big difference between the politics of today and the politics of yester year. During the Watergate hearings there was Republican s, some very powerful ones even, who said if Nixon did do an impeachable offence they would vote to convict and this helped lead to Nixon resigning. I doubt Trump needs to fear that... yet.

Again, my call on this...  the House votes to trial, the Senate fails to convict, the Repubs get slaughtered in 2020 and they can't figure out why (hopfully).

Watching down ticket republicans lose might be worrying for them though.

Soon the Republicans will run out of time. They would be able to get a replacement but they are so damaged that this replacement might not be more electable than Trump. None care if he is guilty so these political questions are the only ones that matter.

Sean in Ottawa

It is hard to imagine a Republican not already compromised by association with Trump or who is not already fatally flawed.

That said there is the possibility of trying to steal this election which might yet be possible under Trump. There are risks of course if they try and fail

Very good chance the the manipulations will really start to move into a higher gear in the Democrats to make sure the winner is not progressive.

The gamble is one of judgment -- do Republicans want to try their luck against a progressive in the hope that they can spook poeple with a "communist" scare or will people seek to compromise any chance that a more progressive option could win. Get it wrong for the Republicans and they could end up with a significantly more progressive president than they bargained for.

Since I am watching from the sidelines with my popcorn I think that would be a great outcome. The evil empire will descend into chaos and possibly a civil war. The other scenario, that seems to be liked by regime changers around the globe, is that Trump will once again lose the popular vote but win the Oval Office because of the non-democratic electoral system. At which point the Democrats will just refuse to recognize his government and again the evil empire will fall into chaos and people around the globe will be able to live in peace temporarily, while the American guns are turned inward.

Impeachment Hearings Highlights Conflict Over US Policy in Ukraine

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2019/11/20/impe-n20.html

"...The entire debate over the Trump-Zelensky phone call is a diversion from the central issue in the inquiry. What has moved impeachment to center-stage in US politics is the furious reaction within the military-industrial apparatus to Trump's actions in two key areas of foreign policy, Ukraine and Syria. Democrat after Democrat in the questioning of witnesses on Tuesday invoked the 2014 CIA-backed and fascist-led coup in Ukraine as an historic advance for American foreign policy that was being placed in danger by Russia and by Trump's alleged accaommodation with Moscow. All of  them proceeded from the script enunciated by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has repeatedly declared with Tump, 'all roads lead to Putin.' In that sense, the impeachment of Trump over Ukraine is an extension of the anti-Russia campaign that was launched by the Democratic Party and the intelligence agencies..."

Lawrence responded, “Yes.”

Nope.  One of the reasons Trump is the only president never to have averaged over 50% job approval is because Democrats have pursued his corruption, abuse of power, and general disdain for the rule of law.

Mobo2000

Interesting counterpunch article today, that mentioned Rick Salutin's columns (reposted on babble) on impeachment several times.  I largely agree with the general argument being made:

https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/11/27/defeat-or-impeach-the-illogic-of...

"As Canadian columnist Rick Salutin asks, and answers: “Does this mean party bosses would rather lose control of the country and presidency than cede power in their party? Absolutely.”

It takes only a minute of thinking past CNN/MSNBC’s blaring insistence that everything is going swimmingly for impeachment, which will be inevitable after the next blockbuster witness, to see how utterly stupid this is. Once this gets into the Senate, it is going to be child’s play for the Republicans—who will now control the witnesses and evidence—not only to go into the weeds of Biden-Burisma and Clinton Foundation corruption, but, as the Washington Post (WaPo) reports they are considering, to “scramble the Democratic presidential race” with a “lengthy impeachment trial” that would “[keep] six contenders in Washington until the eve of the Iowa caucuses or longer.” Much longer. Why not? Gotta be scrupulous in doing that “constitutional duty.”

Of course, two of those captured-in-Washington contenders would be, per WaPo, “the leading progressive candidates, Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.” As Republican John Cornyn says: “Pete Buttigieg and Joe Biden might like that.” The Democratic “party bosses” know it too, so they may not be unamenable to this Republican strategy."

Intervening in Domestic Affairs

There is, however, the major issue looming in the background of this impeachment frenzy: the intervention by elements of the intelligence community in the domestic political affairs of the United States. There is no question that the whistleblower’s complaint served as the genesis of the ongoing impeachment proceedings.

The American people should be deeply concerned that an inquiry which could result in the removal of a duly elected president from office was initiated in secrecy by a member of the intelligence community acting outside the four corners of his legal responsibilities. The legitimacy of the underlying issues being investigated by the House Intelligence Committee is not at issue here; the legitimacy of the process by which these proceedings were initiated is.

To find out what happened, the whistleblower should not only be identified, called before the House Intelligence Committee, and other relevant Congressional committees, and be compelled to answer for his actions.

Impeachment is a constitutional remedy afforded to the U.S. Congress to deal with the political issues surrounding the conduct of a sitting president. If this constitutional remedy can be triggered by the intelligence community in a manner which obviates laws prohibiting the intrusion of intelligence agencies into the domestic political affairs of the United States, and done so in a manner where the identities of the persons and organizations involved, along with their possible motives, are shielded from both American people and those whom they elect to represent them in Congress, then a precedent will have been set for future interventions of this nature which undermine the very foundation of American democracy.

The political weaponization of intelligence represents a significant threat to the viability of the American constitutional republic that cannot be ignored.

Ukrainegate, the New Cold War and the Politics of Impeachment

https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/12/02/ukraine-the-new-cold-war-and-the...

"...From Hillary Clinton's decision in 2016 that Russia stole the election through impeachment, the Democrats' strategy has been to use reactionary nationalism to sideline dissent. As evidence, the central finding of the impeachment inquiry to date is that Ukraine is woefully undersupplied with the weapons needed to fight 'Russian aggression.' 'We' learned that despite Pentagon rumblings at the time, the Obama administration did its patriotic duty by selling 'non-lethal' military equipment to self-described fascists in Ukraine. Mr Trump's crime was that his ham-fisted shakedown effort stood between the Ukrainian and American 'freedom missiles'.

To be clear, Donald Trump has a lot to answer for. He appointed neocon warmonger John Bolton, meaning that he has his name on the US-backed coup in Bolivia, the attempted coup in Venezuela and the genocide in Yemen that he inherited from Barack Obama. But if these are a problem - and they are, so is the Obama/(Hillary) Clinton coup in Ukraine. If Mr Trump had outright stymied the delivery of US weapons to Ukraine, he would have made the world a better place.

The question that has not been answered is why it was politically, legally or morally justified for the US - the Obama administration, to 1) use NGOs and the CIA 2) to join with real and virulent Urainian Nazis to 3) oust the Democratically elected president of Ukraine 4) in order to install a puppet regime that answers to the national security state? Passionate assertions that Donald Trump is corrupt face the question back: what part of this entire operation isn't corrupt?"

The Issue-Less Impeachment: The Corporate Democrats Stand For Nothing, So They Impeach For Nothing

https://www.blackagendareport.com/issue-less-impeachment-corporate-democ...

"The impeachment of Donald Trump has nothing to do with social justice at home and abroad, global environmental stability or the rule of law anywhere on the planet. Rather, the corporate Democrats have methodically narrowed the scope of the indictment to exclude all the actual crimes of this president against humanity, peace, the environment and the rule of law - for the obvious reason that both corporate parties and all modern US presidents are collectively and individually guilty.

In limiting the indictment to Trump's attempted political extortion of Ukraine - for the purposes of influencing a US election - a laughable charge, since the Kiev regime is the creature of the US (Democratic) engineered overthrow of the previous, elected Ukraine government - the Democrats are effectively exonerating themselves and their Republican bretheren of the full spectrum of lawlessness that is everyday politics in the belly of the racist, imperial beast. Trump will be put in the dock for a (relatively) minor offense as a kind of purgative of the whole corporate system's rotten innards. It is like indicting the mass-murdering, criminal war-waging South African apartheid regime for gerrymandering elections in which Blacks, by law, could never vote. The cited offense is meaningless and all the rest is forgiven..."
