The hacking of the DNC computers

The Clintonites would have you believe that it was Putin's people trying to help Trump get elected.

I beg to differ.

Remember Tulsi Gabbard, who has a military background, and who nominated Sanders today, worked at the DNC but quit because of its pro-Clinton activities. I am not suggesting she had anything to do with it but I would fathom to say that there are lots of people who wanted to make those emails public. And Assange is already on record as saying it was not WikiLeaks that release the emails to the public.

Would you "fathom to say" that there exist "lots of people" who knew about those e-mails and what was in them?

Or are you just suggesting that these e-mails were like a summertime Christmas to a lot of people?

My impression is there was a culture at the DNC that Hillary was the chosen one, and has been for a long time.

But what Snowden says is we probably are never going to find out for sure so people will continue spin it as they see fit.

Snowden Explains How To Get To The Bottom Of "Who Hacked The Democrats?

by  Tyler Durden

The scandal continue into the afternoon when a Motherboard article noted that ""metadata show that the Russian operators apparently edited some documents, and in some cases created new documents""

"metadata show that the Russian operators apparently edited some documents, and in some cases created new documents" https://t.co/1NlDua4eRv

— Shashank Joshi (@shashj) July 25, 2016

Perhaps it did, but not the ones that Wasserman Schultz already resigned over. Because while the Democratic party is pointing fingers the underlying reality is simple: no matter who hacked the Wikileak'ed emails, the DNC was engaging in media collusion and actively suppressing the campaign of Bernie Sanders.  To be sure, as some already noted, "one way the DNC could have prevented embarrassing info about its collusion and lies from entering the public domain: not colluded and lied."

One way the DNC could have prevented embarrassing info about its collusion and lies from entering the public domain: not colluded and lied

— Michael Tracey (@mtracey) July 25, 2016

In any case, the fallout from the email leak has been escalating all day, with Sanders supporters booing the former DNC Chairman offstage, forcing her to skip the convention entirely. And so has the fingerpointing at the Kremlin as the culprit behind a scandal that threatens to overshadow even last week's scandal-ridden Republican convention.

But how to get to the bottom of who did what?

One way would be to listen to the person who should know all about this stuff: Edward Snowden. This is what he said earlier today on Twitter:

If Russia hacked the #DNC, they should be condemned for it. But during the #Sony hack, the FBI presented evidence. https://t.co/SG7er8VDRD

— Edward Snowden (@Snowden) July 25, 2016

Even if the attackers try to obfuscate origin, #XKEYSCORE makes following exfiltrated data easy. I did this personally against Chinese ops.

— Edward Snowden (@Snowden) July 25, 2016

Evidence that could publicly attribute responsibility for the DNC hack certainly exists at #NSA, but DNI traditionally objects to sharing.

— Edward Snowden (@Snowden) July 25, 2016

The aversion to sharing #NSA evidence is fear of revealing "sources and methods" of intel collection, but #XKEYSCORE is now publicly known.

— Edward Snowden (@Snowden) July 25, 2016

Without a credible threat that USG can and will use #NSA capabilities to publicly attribute responsibility, such hacks will become common.

— Edward Snowden (@Snowden) July 25, 2016

This is the only case in which mass surveillance has actually proven effective. Though I oppose in principle, it is a mistake to ignore.

— Edward Snowden (@Snowden) July 25, 2016

So there you have it: if you want to know if the Russians "did it", just get a credible, accurate answer from the NSA.

The only problem is getting a "credible and accurate" answer from what is fundamentally a biased, political organization.

But perhaps the biggest irony is that while half the US is accusing Russia of hacking the DNC, it was the US government that was exposed specifically authorizing the hacking of political parties.

Our government specifically authorized the hacking of political parties. Mistakes were made. https://t.co/Wh5OAZmuTNpic.twitter.com/ZRJo1CKqwQ

— Edward Snowden (@Snowden) July 25, 2016

Define irony?

WikiLeaks, the infamous whistleblowing site founded by Julian Assange, released the emails Friday, calling the release “part one of our new Hillary Leaks series.”

There has been discussion. But it's not news. Everyone knew that the DNC was in the tank for Clinton. And that they were doesn't mean she didn't win the nomination fair and square. What is news is that a foreign country would apparently hack one political party's computer system and obtain its file on the opposition candidate.

The Clintonites have got their hands caught in the cookie jar. The nomination process was rigged and obviously the reason Tulsi Gabbard bailed. We don't know what impact this had on the campaign, as debates were not scheduled which were to Clinton's advantage, although Sanders not connecting well enough with visible minorities certainly had an impact as well. The whole system is rotten to the core.

It's only news because the USian media never reports it when the US does it.

great reading...perhaps this is the wrong audience...but this episode totally discredits the political class...essential to be talking about the need for deep alternatives, socialist, decentralist...where and when such discussions will take place?

Only after our economy and finances are in the toilet, the country in chaos? Bill C51 kicked in with all its potential fury?

Too late!

[ Editor’s Note:  Finally a grown up steps up to spank the idiot parade that has emerge from the Democrats desperate and brain dead decision to deflect some of Hillary Clinton’s convention PR disaster by using Russia as the whipping boy for the DNC email release.

We saw instantly the pundits hit the airwaves on this farce with the thin veil cover of “reports in the media have suggested the Russia was to blame for the hacking”…lame, lame, lame.

Of course corporate media just rolled over on that flimsy cover and pushed the story non stop for two days, and running the Democratic leadership’s credibility down even lower, which is hard to do.

Trump once again pulled one of his masterful PR strokes by joking that maybe the Russians could find Hillary’s missing 30,000 emails from her personal email server, a classic case of his inserting himself into the controversy to get the media attention on him, which worked. This is called a “sucker ploy” in the PR world and it worked.

The email instructions went out to all the Democratic media pundits to “pile on Trump” for his asking a foreign power to engage in espionage against the US. This was so stupid it was beyond the pale. Trump was just thrilled with the over reaction as the Dems, and the media made laughing stocks of themselves with their pitiful manipulation display.

The bottom line for all the voters is the irrefutable evidence of what a worthless political class that has emerged from our political system. To even call it second rate would not be fair. It is far from that. We should all join in the fight now by contacting them all to let them know what an embarrassment they are to the country, not only to the public by whatever reputation our country still has.

Don’t let them get by with this without some major public blowback. James Clapper, and derivatively the president, have distanced themselves from this  “Russia did it” circus and cleared the way for us to go on the attack. It is “fix bayonets” time so let’s have some fun and take full advantaged of this silver plate opportunity… Jim W. Dean ]

How many days are we into this now?

There is not one single shred of actual evidence to suggest who actually did the hacking. The only thing we have so far is a massive campaign of Democratic spin to infer that the Russians are behind this in some kind of weird attempt to help Trump.

Mr. Magoo

I could perhaps believe this is nothing more than just more "Russophobia" were it not for the fact that Russian hackers are pretty legendary, and prolific.

Here's a Google search for "russian hackers", limited to hits prior to September of last year (so, nothing about DNC, Clinton, other recent events).  Looks like they've been at this for a while.  I get that's not a strong proof of anything, but it's not like any of this is particularly out of the ordinary either, evidently.

WikiLeaks walks back Assange claim on hacking Trump tax returns

There's a distinction between Clinton's e-mails and the DNC's e-mails in terms of claims of Russian involvement.

See, this is why I'm so fed up with the MSM:

WikiLeaks, the group that put out the D.N.C. emails publicly last month, interjected itself into the hacking case again this week when it offered a $20,000 reward for information on the shooting death last month of a former D.N.C. staff member, Seth Rich, outside his Washington home. His killing fueled speculation on the internet that he was somehow tied to the hacked emails, but the police have not given any credence to that speculation.

Preceeded by:

The F.B.I. says it has no direct evidence that Mrs. Clinton’s private email server was hacked by the Russians or anyone else. But in June, the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, said that intruders had tried, and that any successful intruders were probably far too skilled to leave evidence of their intrusion behind. Law enforcement officials said he had the Russians in mind.

First line of the article:

WASHINGTON — A Russian cyberattack that targeted Democratic politicians was bigger than it first appeared and breached the private email accounts of more than 100 party officials and groups, officials with knowledge of the case said Wednesday.

So we have no real knowledge of where those emails came from, no evidence whatsoever of a hack, just a bogeyman "Well whoever it was was far too skilled to leave evidence but just take our word for it...and when he said whoever it was he meant the Russians" -unnamed source, meanwhile the source of the leaks - Wikileaks - has repeatedly hinted at a leak and more recently hinted that Seth Rich was the leaker. Yet it is stated as fact at the very start of the article that the emails were obtained by a Russian hack. Fuck this bias.

Edit: Oh wow, when reviewing the article I realized their mental gymnastics to push their narrative are even sloppier. They aren't even saying the FBI - even unnamed sources - has given any credence to Russians being the hackers of the DNC at all. They are just talking about how Clinton's personal email was hacked by Russians. As though that automatically makes the Russians responsible for the leak of DNC emails.

"No police or FBI source has led credence to whether the DNC emails came from a hack or a leak. We will denounce the idea it was a leak while state as fact that it was a hack, because we have an agenda to push."

Yes, I just noticed this and made an edit. That actually makes it worse because they are even more clearly jumping to conclusions that fit the narrative of their partners in the DNC.

Anytime the mainstream media talks about "cyber" anything, you're about to hear a stream of bullshit.

Whenever there's a high profile data leak, the mainstream media will trot out so-called cyber security experts who will pronounce that the leak is the work of some sophisticated state actor.

Bullshit

Exploit kits (kits that exploit existing weaknesses in software) are available for sale on the seamier parts of the web.

If a server hasn't been set up properly, isn't being properly monitored and/or patched (probably most of them because security is a pain in the ass) it can be exploited.

And any reasonably skilled network system admin can figure out how to use exploit kits in a matter of a few hours.

The "Sony Pictures hack" was blamed on North Korea by all of the talking heads in the mainstream media.   Later on independent researchers showed that it was most likely an "inside job" by disgruntled former Sony IT employees
