Israel and Liberal International Criminal Court Hypocrisy

https://yvesengler.com/2020/03/05/israel-and-the-liberals-international-...

"Just when you think Canadian government hypocrisy could hit no greater heights, the Liberals unleash a double-standards rocket to the stars. The Trudeau government recently pressed the International Criminal Court to stop investigating Israeli warcrimes. Ottawa sent a letter to the ICC saying it didn't believe the court had jurisdiction over Palestine.

'Canada's longstanding position is that it does not recognize the accession of such a state to international treaties, including the Rome Statute. In the absence of a Palestinian state, it is Canada's view that the Court does not have jurisdiction in this matter,' a Global Affairs official told the Jerusalem Post. But it doesn't matter if Canada recognizes Palestine. The vast majority of UN member states recognized Palestine and it joined the ICC in 2015.

In response to Ottawa's letter to the ICC, PLO Secretary General Saeb Erekat tweeted that Canada supported 'Israel's campaign for impunity'. Erekat added, 'it is not about jurisdiction. It is about war crimes. This is an encouragement to continue the war crimes."

'I came here to thank you for your support for Israel. Canada supports us because of you and their relations with you and because of your ability to make the case for the Zionist movement in the Land of Israel.'  President of Israel, Reuven Rivlin, April 5, 2019 (A Special Message to Toronto's Jewish Community - UJA Federation)

It appears Netanyahu may finally be out, or partly out.  How much actual difference this will make very much remains to be seen.  We can assume it will do nothing to help the Palestinians, since Blue and White's position on the Occupation is for all practical purposes identical to Likud's.

Not at all. Syphilis or Gonhorrea? Zionist warcriminal or Zionist warciminal? The most important thing is to stop supporting Apartheid Israel and its Zionist support base here in Canada.

What is the "Zionist support base here in Canada"?

"There are people in the NDP who reject the Palestinian call to boycott Israel, and say we should work with our progressive partners in the Israeli Labor Party. Now that Labor has joined a coalition government with Netanyahu based on a promise to annex the West Bank, what do they say?"

Canada's Hill & Knowlton Zionist left party whose leadership crushed even a nominal and mild BDS motion in their own convention. Like all the other Canadian parliamentary parties they are owned by Israel and subservient to its lobby. Who cares what they say? A stake through its politically bankrupt walking-dead collaborationist heart is long overdue - to be replaced with something activist, better and new.

We do have a party to the left of the NDP here in Québec, but so many NDP MPs and supporters critical of that regime have been stifled and don't know where to start. Ideas, please, not just criticism (though I do think the criticism is warranted).

Of what?  It's not anywhere close to Netanyahu leaving office-when he gets close to the eighteen month mark, he will obviously find some way of creating a situation that allows him to stay in office indefinitely.  And if the man manages to get immunity from prosecution, he will stay in office until he dies.  By whatever point that happens, any possibility of a peaceful, just and humane resolution of the Israel/Palestine dispute and the liberation of the Palestinian people from tyranny will be forever lost.

There are a tiny number of people in Israel who want peace and who recognize that first step to making any real chance is to end the oppression of the Palestinian people, to stop the useless and indefensible practice of punishing ALL Palestinians for the acts of the violent, but those people have permanently lost the argument in that country.

Israel will be governed by Netanyanu after Netanyahu after Netanyahu.  It will never have a government that puts ending the killing above taking land for the sake of taking land.

For all practical purposes, the only opposition to anything Netanyahu does, among parties in the Knesset, comes from the Joint List, which is post-Zionist.   Both halves of what used to be Blue and White-half of its former deputies are now in a separate party, Yesh Atid-are exactly like Likud on "security" issues.  The Israeli Labor Party, which is now in a grouping that holds only 10% of the seats in the Knesset, is also largely in agreement with Likud on security issues.  Meretz, the supposed "peace party", is now for all practical purposes extinct, holding only a trivial number of seats as part of the same deeply unpopular slate Labor is part of.

There is no possibility for change in that country at this time, and it's likely that none will emerge for years or decades to come.

The only way there ever could be a possibility for change would be if somebody formed a true party of the growing number of poor Israelis in both communities, a party that linked ending the war with Palestinians to a radical redistribution of wealth and political power in that country and made the case that maintaining the status quo, continuing a pointless and increasingly brutal of an area which has had an Arab majority for over a millennium, is doing harm to the working and kept-from-working poor.

The Joint List comes closest to being that party, but its critique of the status quo isn't radical enough and it has not been able to connect with the majority of the poor in Israeli society.

No, it doesn't.  Most of the West Bank ends up in Israeli control under the plan and all the Palestinians get are a few tiny, useless slivers of non-contiguous wasteland.  It's not possible to make a state from the irrelevant, barren deadlands Jared leaves the Palestinians out of what we we are supposed to see as the goodness of his heart.  The whole purpose of what Jared came up with was to humiliate and possibly sign the death warrant for any Palestinian leader who signed on.

An actual peace plan would treat the Palestinian side with "parity of esteem" and admit that the conflict is grounded in a land dispute, not bigotry.

kropotkin1951

The hard line Israeli plan is very Canadian. Instead of an Indian Act you get a Palestinian Act with the same tiny reservations and Palestinian Agents controlling all aspect of the Palestinians lives both on and off reserve.

Not treating your enemies with respect tends to lead to your own destruction.

Indeed.  It is fundamentally wrong to use the words "Jewish" and "Zionist" as if they are interchangeable.  These days, most Zionists AREN'T Jewish-numerically, there are far more "Christian" evangelicals who identify as "Zionist" than there are people of any other ethnicity or faith tradition, and an increasing number of people who are Jewish, especially in North America, are speaking out against the brutality the Israeli government subjects Palestinians, including the vast majority of Palestinians who are NOT militants in the armed struggle; and a smaller but growing number are questioning "actually existing Zionism" itself.

Ken Burch

Also, it is a fair question as to whether any Palestinians would even have been enemies of the Zionist project had it been constructed in such a way-as early Zionists such as Martin Buber and Judah Magnes suggested-as to create a state that honored the self-determination objective without dispossessing people or creating a state which was ethnic-supremacist or to have led to the kind of ethnic cleansing-and the unjust implication that those being dispossesed had an obligation to leave the lands their ancestors had always lived on, based on the implication that dispossessed were somehow complicit in the barbaric history of European Christian persecution of Jews-an assertion which reached an obscene level of absurdity in the insinuations that the Arabs of Palestine could have singlehandedly prevented the Holocaust-a despicable lie, given that everyone knew Hitler would never have been allowed his intended victims to simply leave Europe-but refused to do so-and not only that, a lie which led to Palestinians and other Arabs to be unjustly vilified, while allowing the North American countries, the UK, and Australia and New Zealand to evade responsibility for either turning away virtually ALL Jewish refugees and for the UK's  insistence on taking only children, many of whom were forced to convert to Christianity by their host families after their own parents had been sent back to Europe to die.

It is time to ask:  was it ever justifiable, in any way at all, for those pushing for the creation of Israel in the late 1940s, or for the hasbara(Israeli propaganda) machine of today, to paint Palestinians and other Arabs as though they were no different than the Romans, the tsars, or Hitler, as if they were the successors in anti-Jewish villainy to this Christian European villains?

It is deeply ingrained in British Canada's DNA. Canadians fought in the Boer War so opposing racism by a guy named de Klerk was easy to do. We also supported the Balfour Declaration and since then the Palestinian's have not really existed in the minds of our policy makers.

Wow, that is so blatant. I'm hoping that Dunan McCue purposely used "Palestine" knowing that he would be reprimanded and made to apologize for it. I think the apology itself draws attention to how biased the CBC is.

NDPP

As an Indigenous broadcaster who wrote the book on how to report on Indigenous peoples, and a long-time journalist of some stature at the CBC, Duncan McCue could and should have refused to apologize rather than publicly undermine the Indigenous struggle for Palestine.
