Russkies At the Doorstep

http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/10/11/russkies-at-the-doorstep/

"In a year noted for crude political discourse, eagerly serialized in the mainstream media, the MSM are themselves bellowing anti-Russian rhetoric, conspiracy theory and fear mongering. Of the two 'evil of two lessers' contender Trump is the one who regularly gets hammered, justifiably in th3e case of his anti-Muslim and other racist and sexist slurs,

while Clinton gets a pass, even an A+ for her repeated verbal assaults on Russia and its president, even as she reeks of class hostility toward Trump supporters.

Glenn Greenwald put it aptly: anyone who advocates better relations or less tension with Moscow is a likely sympathizer, stooge or even agent of Putin.

With an anticipated Clinton victory in November, defense industry stock investments should do very well, and it might not be a bad idea to also build a well-stocked bomb shelter."

Would it really be that crazy to work with China,Russia and Iran in fighting ISIS? And work with these countries to boycott and sanction Saudi Arabia? To give families of victims from 9/11 the right to sue Saudi Arabia?

With all the fracking and oil sands in our own country and the US,why do we need Saudi oil? If you got Europe,Russia,China,Iran and anyone else to boycott Saudi oil?

Without oil,Saudi Arabia is just one big sand dune. Stop arming them and stop funding them.

I'm afraid with a Hillary victory, will bring in a status quo approach to the Middle East which makes as much sense as 2+2=100.

The CIA is arming one set of rebels and the Pentagon is arming a rival rebel group and ALL the rebel groups are JIHADISTS.

Get out of Syria, let Russia take care of the rebels (who are all Islamic fundamentalists) and let Assad's regime be.

Have we not learned anything in the past 60 years when we enforce regime change? Just look at Iraq and Libya.

End rant.

They are spinning exactly that same scenario with Bernie Sanders taking Vermont and holding the balance of power. Maybe the two of them can duke it out for the prize.

Saudi Arabia is very valuable to the USA because they use their oil money to buy manufactured goods from the USA, mostly in the form of weapons, one of the last places where the USA is still a major manufacture.

And don't forget, the USA is still the largest oil importer in the world (as a single country - the EU imports somewhat more, but that's spread over a number of countries).

Jon Schwarz wrote:

TREATING THE WHOLE voting thing as a formality, serious political players are now pondering how exactly President Hillary Clinton can pass what Sen. Elizabeth Warren has called “a giant wet kiss for tax dodgers.”

This discussion isn’t happening on television, where normal people would hear about it. Or on Reddit, where people would freak out about it. To the degree it’s taking place in public at all, it surfaces in elite publications, where only elites are paying attention.

For instance, Peter Orszag, a top Obama economic official before he left to cash in with Citigroup, just wrote an op-ed in the Financial Times on how to make the wet kiss happen.

...

So even as regular Democratic voters are concentrating on beating Donald Trump, the serious people of Washington are quietly putting the wheels in motion for what those same voters will find to be a highly unpleasant 2017 surprise.

I don't think Hillary has got this in the bag yet. Wiki Leaks has Democratic Party emails and they are slowly releasing hacked emails to the media every day. There are still about three weeks to go and I think Wiki Leaks has information that will eventually bring HRC down. I don't like this election. I think that this is the vilest and most disgraceful election campaign that I have ever seen. I think that both Donald and Hillary are never going to see the promised land, and I am very worried about this outcome. It is not good at all.

As idiotic as most of of Trump the Chump's comments are, a bunker mentality would be very unfortunate for Hillary, and she needs to rise above the absurdness of it all.

22 toxic days for Hillary Clinton

The polls point to the promised land. But she'll have to get past Trump and WikiLeaks first.

While some Clinton allies confess to spending hours at night reading through the entire email dump, others have chosen to simply steer clear of it all together. “We all write things in emails we probably shouldn’t,” conceded Clinton donor Jay Jacobs. “If there is a price to be paid, I think it’s a mild one. I’m purposefully not looking — it’s really not any of my business. Someone has illegally decided to do that.”

Barring some unforeseen shock — and 2016 has featured its share of them already — the most lasting impact of the campaign’s dispiriting dismount might be to harden an already-pervasive opinion among Clinton’s staff that she is forever being denied her due as a serious historical figure.

That could set the tone for how her team operates if they get to the White House and whether a candidate who was already wary of the press and obsessed with efforts to attack her will make a bunker of the Oval Office.

“I didn’t start off this campaign feeling bitter, and I always made fun of how paranoid she was,” said a Clinton ally who, like so many working on her behalf, supported Barack Obama in 2008. “But I’m really starting to understand where she’s coming from. I’m starting to hate some of the people doing these things to her.”

So aside from "everybody knows..." (at least "those close to Clinton", although no-one is quoted or even identified), is there any beef to the theory? Feels a little thin to me, like a classroom logic problem featuring argument built on a premise that may or may not be true. I get the sense that the truth of it is as irrelevant as it would be in that instance.

Wikileaks has some interesting details on her no fly zone. Her public position is it's necessary to stop Russia and Syria (Assad) from bombing areas with civilians. In other words, the no fly zone is to protect citizens. Her private position is that in order to enforce it the U.S. would have to do the following:

"To have a no-fly zone you have to take out all of their air defenses, many of which are located in populated areas. So our missiles, even if they are standoff missiles so we’re not putting our pilots at risk – you’re going to kill a lot of civilians," admitted Clinton.

So, if a lot of civilians are going to die either way(assuming Russia is bombing civilians and not the rebels/ISIS like she claims), why is she so eager to make sure that the US does the killing? Does she want to shoot down Russian planes that badly?

So that's a little more beef to the theory.

Surely one way is that the bombings continue and Amerikkka does nothing, and civilians die.

What if both sides just take a day off?  What if nobody gives Amerikkka reason to enforce a no-fly zone, and conversely Amerikkka doesn't "enforce" an unnecessary no-fly zone?  Thoughts on that?  And what it would take to make that happen?

Okay, I'll bite.

You propose a ceasefire to negotiate ("take a day off"). This was recently tried, unfortunately, it collapsed after only two days when America accidentally (or "accidentally") bombed Syrian forces (for the first time in this conflict) that were surrounded by ISIS. I can find the sources on request but I'm on mobile and going to bed so, if requested, it won't be until tomorrow night.

So it seems that the Russians and their allies (Assad in this case) have little reason to trust in America's commitment to eliminating ISIS. And of course there is still the issue that Obama and Hillary are still set on regime change in Syria.

Further, considering the unrest in the many other countries where America has decided to force regime change, and considering how close Syria is to Russia, it is not reasonable to expect Russia to allow the US to further destabilize the region by creating another power vaccuum to be filled by ISIS and other terror groups.

Remember that in 2011, Russia did not veto the intervention in Libya because the US said they were not seeking regime change. Fast forward to Hillary Clinton's glib "we came, we saw, he died!"

Like it or not, Russia is not the agressor here. Russia is going to defend Russian interests and has every reason to doubt the sincerity of American foreign policy. The war in Syria is becoming a proxy war between America and Russia and there seems to be little appetite from the American side to cool things off.

Clinton and Biden's rhetoric on cybersecurity and cyber attacks against Russia certainly aren't helping matters. They are literally using Russia as a scapegoat for political purposes (to distract from the corruption, collusion, and criminal activity revealed in the dnc and podesta emails) at a time when relations between the US and Russia are the worst they've been since the end of the cold war.

I don't think Russia is blameless, of course, but if I was Russian, Chinese, Iranian, or Syrian, I wouldn't trust the US' intentions either.

Russia is publicly preparing to defend itself from an attack on Russian soil that they seem to believe could happen in the very near future. Did you know that there are enough nuclear bunkers in Moscow alone to house 12 million people?

So, what if "nobody" (read: Russia) gives America "reason" (read: excuse) to enforce a no-fly zone, thereby eliminating the "need" (read: desire) for one? I guess to make that happen America would need to demonstrate that it will deal honestly and fairly at the negotiating table - something it has consistently failed to do for the last 5 years.

Don't worry though, once Madame Secretary becomes Madame President America can begin healing the damaged relations with Russia and Russia's allies. Her foreign policy experience is faultless, and she and Putin clearly get along well.

We just need to hope that Trump doesn't get in. If he becomes president (the chances of which are basically impossible considering he is -12% in completely unbiased polls), we all can be sure he's going to insult Moscow and Beijing on the very first day and we'll be embroiled in not just war, but nuclear war, within days.

The email is from Clinton’s 2008 campaign, which you may recall did not turn out so well for her. But Mattzie is not talking about the kinds of polls that show Trump is losing big league, to use one of his favorite phrases—those polls are done by pollsters in concert with media outlets. Instead, he’s talking about polling that campaigns do internally to decide how to target voters.

The Washington Post’s Philip Bump, who has an excellent explainer on what is (most likely) going on here, writes: “Mattzie’s talking about polling that’s done by campaigns and political action committees to inform media buys. In other words, before campaigns spend $200,000 on a flight of TV spots, they’ll poll on the messages in those ads and figure out what to say to whom and then target that ad to those people as best they can.” The oversampling portion of the email, Bump goes on to explain, refers to the fact that it’s often difficult to get the right sample sizes: “Normal polling in a state will usually have no problem getting enough white people in the mix to evaluate where they stand, but you may need to specifically target more black or Hispanic voters to get a statistically relevant sample size.” In this instance, Mattzie is probably referring to “Native Americans and Democrat-leaning independents and moderate Republican women.”
