The Bloody Road to Damascus; The Triple Alliance's War on a Sovereign State  -  by James Petras

"From this inside look into the destabilization process of Syria, Professor James Petras, adduces that 'there is a clear and overwhelming evidence that the uprising to overthrow President Assad is a violent power-grab led by foreign-supported fighters who have killed and wounded thousands of Syrian soldiers, police and civilians, partisans of the government and its peaceful opposition..

The imperial policy of ruin and rule in Libya serves as 'the model' for Syria. According to the State Department, 'The road to Tehran passes through Damascus': The strategic goal of NATO is to destroy Iran's principal ally in the Middle East. Three Key Members Quit Syria's SNC Opposition Bloc

http://www.presstv.ir/detail/231718.html

"Three prominent members of the main Syrian opposition group have broken away, accusing the group of serving the interests of foreign countries. Al Labwani however, said they resigned because they did not want to be 'accomplices to the massacre of the Syrian people.' He also accused the head of the SNC Burhan Ghalioun of running the organization autocratically.

The SNC is 'linked to foreign agendas which aim to prolong the battle while waiting...for the country to be dragged into a civil war,' said al-Labwani, adding that 'There is no council, it's an illusion.' He also said many more will quit the council in the coming days."

Six Ways The Media Has Misrepresented Syria  -  by Afshin Mehrpouya

http://www.counterpunch.org/2012/03/14/six-ways-the-media-has-misreporte...

"As in the case of Libya, from NY Times to Fox News, from Guardian to National Post and from Le Monde to Le Figaro, the Western mainstream media's coverage of the Syrian conflict has been mostly simplistic and black & white with a Hollywoodian good (opposition) and evil (Syrian govenrment) story.

As in the case of Libya, this one-sided coverage of the Syrian conflict is facilitating the escalation of the conflict toward a civil war and foreign military intervention which might serve the short-term interests of mainstream countries and forces but would be disastrous for the people of Syria.

The Western media has a significant and grave moral responsibility to move from the current one-sided and biased lynching of the Syrian government to a more balanced, nuanced and comprehensive approach."

Pro-Assad Rally in Damascus Decries 'One Year Conspiracy' (and vid)

"...There are many circumstances to increase Assad's popularity while weakening the opposition, says ME expert Ali Rizek. 'Because of the procedures, because of the practices which some of the opposition resorted to, they have lost a lot of their supporters,' Rizk said.

'When you see Syrian opposition figures speaking about for example cutting off ties, or decreasing your ties with Iran, cutting Syria off from what we refer to as 'a resistance axis', I think all that does is give more popularity to the Syrian regime."

Majority of Americans oppose intervening in Syria, new poll finds

Quote:

Almost two-thirds of Americans oppose any form of U.S. military intervention in Syria, according to a new poll released Thursday by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.

The findings may reflect the public's wariness about wading into what it perceives as a protracted civil war between the regime of President Bashar al-Assad and Syrian rebels. The year-old Syrian uprising and crackdown has killed an estimated 8,000 people.  The results also appear to reflect Americans' war-weariness more than a decade after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

This is a very good question.  When the ramp up to the attack on Libya was happening in 2011 Canada was also ramping up to a federal election.  Though disappointed in the NDP voting with the government in favour of Canadian military intervention, I put it down to the NDP not wanting to fight the election on foreign policy issues.  Now, with Syria in question, we are years before an election and the NDP is still unwilling to take a coherent stand for peace.  It is beyond disappointing and may eventually be a deal-breaker for me.

If the federal NDP does not orient its policies to the promotion of peace and instead continues to embrace military solutions to foreign policy issues and the use of NATO as an imperialist tool, then I'm done supporting the federal NDP.  For the past decade there has been weasel words on Afghanistan, complicity on Libya and now leadership candidates gung ho for a military mission to Syria.  At a certain point I recognize the values clash, will stop making excuses for pro-war NDP policies and will look to political alternatives.  Jack Layton had an ability to make people suspend disbelief, I'm not sure the next NDP leader will be able to pull off the same trick.

Newz Media Accuses Syrian Government of Collaborating with Al Qaeda. How the Media Refutes its own Lies and Fabrications

Michel Chossudovsky wrote:
The latest terrorist attack in Damascus is described by the media as yet another government sponsored initiative geared towards killing Syrian civilians.

The CTV-AP report of this tragic event resulting in 27 deaths and some 140 wounded is riddled with contradictions. First it acknowledges that the target of the attacks was government buildings including Air Force Intelligence and National Security buildings in Damascus:

Two explosions rocked the Syrian capital of Damascus Saturday ... The twin suicide car bombs were aimed at intelligence and security buildings in the capital. (CTV, March 17, 2012, emphasis added)

Obviously, it follows, says the report, that the Syrian regime is responsible for targeting its own government buildings.

Now why on earth would it do that? The answer: "The attacks occurred in areas where government security is typically high, raising opposition suspicions that the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was responsible." (Ibid, emphasis added)

Layton never made me suspend disbelief.  He and the majority of the leadership angered me with their catering to militarism.  I remained a member of the provincial NDP but refused to give the federal NDP another dime last year, finally, over Afghanistan and then the Libyan lapdog dance for NATO.

Will the NDP soon establish some process of accountability for its leader and the policy-makers within the party, that will allow genuine consultation with the general membership and the right of the general membership to force the leadership to change course on specific issues?

I re-joined for the leadership vote and I donated to candidates I would like to see able to pull significant weight in the near future, but I'm not long for this party either, 1springgarden.

Hoodeet, the only party in Ottawa to have consistently voted against the mission extensions in Afghanistan is the NDP. This fact can be checked against the Parliamentary record on House votes.

Jack Layton said to Iggy that he was Harper's best friend. That, too, is historical fact and can be verified by the Parliamentary record.

US To Give 'Non Lethal' Aid to Syria Opposition  -  by Niall Green

"The clear purpose of this type of 'non-lethal' material is to allow the Syrian opposition to more effectively coordinate its attacks on government forces and institutions. High tech communications equipment will also enable insurgents operating inside Syria to receive orders from their headquarters in neighboring Turkey and Jordan.

In the event of an international military intervention against Syria, such communications devices will provide the link between fighters on the ground and the warplanes and missiles of foreign armed forces. This would allow a replay of the tactics used during the NATO-led war against Libya last year, when local fighters called in Western air-strikes to incinerate the Gadhafi regime's army.."

Quote:
What went wrong for the advocates of regime change? In general, they overplayed their hand and believed too much of their own propaganda. By this January, everything they did was predicated on international military intervention, or a convincing threat of it. But this ceased to be an option on February 4 when Russia and China vetoed a UN Security Council resolution, backed by the Arab League, calling on Assad to step down. The experience of the US, EU, NATO and the Arab Gulf states in overthrowing Muammar Gaddafi turned out to be misleading when it came to Syria.

This has been the experience of revolutionaries and counter-revolutionaries throughout the ages. What succeeds in one country proves a recipe for disaster in another. There was also a misreading of what had happened in Libya. Watching al-Jazeera television, it might appear that heroic rebel militiamen - and at times they were heroic - had overthrown a tyrant but, in reality, military victory was almost wholly due to the NATO air assault. The militiamen were a mopping-up force who occupied territory after air strikes had cleared the way (this was also the pattern in Afghanistan in 2001 and in Iraqi Kurdistan in 2003).

THE "SYRIAN SCENARIO": What Is Really Going On In Syria: An Insider Report

Dr. Boris Dolgov wrote:
At present there are three main trends in the Syrian patriotic opposition - democratic, liberal and left, which is mainly a communist one. The Syrian Social Nationalist Party is the most influential party among the democratic forces. It is also the oldest party which was established in 1932. As Iliah Saman, a member of the political bureau of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party said, the party's program is more conservative in comparison with the Baath's program. Nevertheless there are no differences of principle between the two parties. According to him, the policy of the US, France and England is the main destabilizing factor in Syria. He said that those countries were acting in the interests of Israel and had the goal to divide Syria into five state formations on the basis of religious and ethnical differences.

The liberal trend of the opposition is represented by the recently registered secular democratic social movement led by Nabil Feysal, one of the Syrian intellectuals, a writer and a translator. He is an outright opponent of the Islamic fundamentalism, supporter of the liberal democracy. His goal is to turn Syria into "Middle Eastern Denmark" ...

There is a dearth of political lackeys willing to go along with forcing neoliberal ideology on Syrians. And unlike the former Yugoslavia and Libya, this is a problem for the western banking cabal and corporatocracy looking to expand into the Middle East and Brzezinski's arch of chaos or whatever countries.

And there are a lack of right wing religious fundamentalists for the west to hand-pick for democratization neoliberal style. This goes against the Gladios formula for propping-up militant Islam as they have in so many other countries.

Russians say no repetition of the Libyan scenario. And I might add that my previous comparison to the dirty war in Nicaragua is not quite accurate. Although the U.S. was feeding weapons and aid to hired mercenaries in Honduras and Costa Rica to attack the Sandinistas, women and children, and destroying villages similarly, I think that some large contingent of Contra terrorists were actual Nicaraguans. It appears that in Syria's case, a larger percentage of the mercenaries are non-Syrian and even Al-Qa'eda and Qa'eda-affiliated right wing fundamentalists from other countries. And I tend to think Qa'eda is sometimes just another word for hired mercenaries and those without any religious motivation except for worship of mammon and spoils of dirty war.

Assad: Aid to rebels must stop for Annan's Syria peace plan to succeed

Quote:
Assad's demands

"President Assad said that for his mission to succeed, Annan must focus on drying up the wells of support for terrorism pointed at Syria, especially from countries which have announced that they are arming and financing the terrorist groups in Syria," SANA reported.

"In our experience in Iraq, we see that arming both sides will result in proxy wars regionally and internationally. This option will provide the grounds for foreign military intervention in Syria," Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki told the Arab leaders.

Assad says foreign aid for Gladio terror must end.

One of the reasons the Arab Spring revolts were left incomplete comes down to a lack of organisation - without which revolution is not possible. The revolts came about through conscious grassroots movements: they will rise again to uproot these regimes.

And as Annan seeks a reprieve for remaining militant forces, the West is meeting in neighboring Turkey, devising a method to rearm and redeploy them in order to reignite and perpetuate the bloodshed they claim they are trying to prevent.

It is highly improbable that the government's troops, faced by the revolutionaries in the hills around them, are going to stop shooting back.."

US, NATO Powers Intensify Threats on Syria - by Bill Van Auken

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2012/apr2012/syri-a11.shtml

"Endorsed by the Security Council as well as the Arab League and accepted by the government of President Bashar al Assad, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the Annan plan, as far as Washington, the Western European powers, Turkey and the reactionary Gulf oil sheikdoms are concerned, represented merely a ploy aimed at legitimizing imperialist intervention.

The ex-UN secretary general rejected out of hand an appeal made by the Syrian government on April 8 for the UN to secure written guarantees from the armed groups such as the Free Syrian Army that they would halt terrorist violence and from countries in the region that they would stop financing and arming these factions.

Two incidents Monday involving Syrian troops firing across the country's borders have heightened tensions and raised the spectre of the Western-stoked civil war turning into a regional conflagration.."

What's Goin' On At the Turkish-Syrian Border? - by Pepe Escobar (and vid)

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/ND12Ak03.html

"There is a video that could be loosely translated as Terrorist Turkish border opening fire on the Syrian side' that pretty accurately sums up what's going on at the ultra-volatile geopolitical hotspot at the moment. What this means is that Turkey is sheltering the FSA right on the border, only a few meters - and not kilometers - away from Syrian territory.

Way beyond hosting a NATO command and control center in Iskenderun, Turkey has now advanced right to the border, enabling a back-and-forth by heavily weaponized guerrillas/mercenaries to attack a sovereign state..."
