The city's Alumetco plant will be shut down, costing at least 85 hourly jobs, after its parent company filed for bankruptcy protection.
Burlington Technologies was granted the protection Tuesday under a law that gives insolvent firms a chance to reorganize while protecting them from creditors.
Besides the Brantford jobs, the company is cutting 45 jobs from its Burlington and Cambridge operations and at its head office in Oakville.
"They filed for bankruptcy today and as I understand it they're going to be closing the Brantford facility and the Oakville facility," Doug Aitchison, president of CAW Local 397, said Tuesday. "They're going to try to keep the Cambridge and Burlington facilities open but at reduced capacity."
